Full Job Description

As an Apprentice Sewing Machinist at MSA Bristol you will learn to operate a range of sewing machines and learn to undertake sewing tasks within a modern manufacturing environment. A successful sewing machinist will strive for right first time principals in line with LEAN manufacturing methods which will be incorporated into your training. You will understand the importance of your role within the wider manufacturing activity and will be given visibility of other functions and how they interconnect in order to meet the needs of the customer.

  • Undertake the sewing of Fire garments in accordance with the pattern supplied and in line with the standard operating procedure

  • In conjunction with the Design Department make sample garments to support the Sales tender process

  • Confidently unpick, repair, and make good all repairs needed on the garment identified

  • How to thread and operate a selection of industrial sewing machines

  • Understand the composition of different elements and parts of the garment and learn how to assemble and sew each component

  • Understand sewing and fabric terminology and how to apply this knowledge to the Standard Operating Procedures

  • Obtain a broad knowledge of other skills within the garment industry including, inspection, graphic application, fabric cutting, supply chain

    Level 2 Sewing Machinist - Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours

  • Level 1 Maths and English Functional skills, if required (exemptions apply), Communication skills, Attention to detail, Organisation skills, Problem solving skills, Analytical skills, Logical, Team working, Creative, Initiative, Non judgemental, Patience, Physical fitness, GCSE or equivalent English (Grade 9 to 4) Desired

  • GCSE or equivalent Maths (Grade 9 to 4) Desired, No previous sewing experience is required, although an interest in sewing would be an advantage. We are willing to consider applicants who are dexterous in their hobbies or current roles. E.g. soldering, electronics, handicraft. The role would suit individuals who, once trained, can work under pressure and can follow operating procedures, and problem-solving as the situation demands. You will be positive in your approach, and remain professional to your team around you and the wider business.
