Full Job Description

The Senior Server Engineer (SSE) role is a technical position and requires extensive knowledge and experience of the following:

  • Virtualisation (Microsoft Hyper-V, Failover Cluster Manager, VMWare etc)

  • Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, WSUS, Group Policy etc

  • Microsoft 365 (Azure Active Directory, SharePoint, Teams, Exchange Online etc)

  • Mail & Web Filtering (Clearswift, Proxies etc)

  • Microsoft Operating Systems (Windows Server, Windows 10 & 11 etc)

  • VPN Applications (Microsoft Direct Access, Always on VPN etc)

  • Remote Desktop Services or VDI

  • Backup and Recovery Tools (Microsoft DPM, Backup Exec etc)

  • Antivirus (Sophos, Windows Defender etc)

  • Server Hardware Installation & Maintenance (Compute, Storage etc)

  • Microsoft SQL Server

  • Microsoft Exchange

  • Microsoft SCCM

  • Understanding of Computer Networking principl


  • Experience of the following would also be beneficial:
  • 999 or patient care systems within the NHS

  • Microsoft Intune

  • Microsoft Azure (IaaS / PaaS)

  • Monitoring Solutions e.g., SolarWinds

  • Microsoft Power Automate & Power Apps


  • The post holder, alongside the other SSE's, will be responsible for the installation and maintenance of the trust's server and wider digital infrastructure estate, including coordinating any installs, moves, changes, break/fix and decommissioning of assets and services.Please note applicants must be eligible for SC clearance:

  • Act as a technical specialist, offering technical advice to key decision makers & senior management within the trust.

  • Translate business requirements for IT services into technical deliverables within the server environment. It will require a thorough understanding of industry trends and opportunities.

  • Sustain a lead position as an implementation engineer working with the Trust's Project Management Team.

  • Provide mentorship to the Server Engineers and wider technical teams.

  • Ensure that comprehensive technical documentation is created and approproately maintained.

  • Plan, monitor and as required, install, commission, and maintain digital infrastructure, hardware and software systems, networks, and telecommunications solutions.

  • Perform physical maintenance of on-site server hardware e.g., Drive swaps, memory upgrades etc.

  • Provide out-of-hours cover for the Trust's business critical systems as part of an on-call rota.

  • Ensuring that a comprehensive virus protection and security patching scheme is enforced and maintained across the Trust as part of a security patching rota.

  • Design and maintain effective systems of data integrity and security and ensure that comprehensive backup and disaster recovery procedures exist and are operated.

  • Liaise with suppliers to scope goods and services appropriate to the department.

  • Act as a third line engineer, responding to service requests and incidents escalated to the Server Team, meeting the appropriate SLAs.
