Full Job Description

We are looking for a highly experienced, motivated researcher to join our Gender & Inclusion research team. This individual will play a key role in supporting our growing Gender & Inclusion research team, with staff across the UK and Kenya, in the delivery of our gender and inclusion-focussed research and evaluation projects. You will be based in the UK, working largely remotely. Candidates must have the right to work in the UK.

Specifically, you will be part of our growing Gender & Inclusion research team, working on the delivery of short to mid-term projects focusing on the triple nexus between humanitarian aid, development and peacebuilding. In particular, the team deliver projects pertaining to: gender mainstreaming; the promotion of gender equality; the inclusion of minorities including those with disabilities and of diverse SOGIE; the delivery of gender assessments using a range of relevant tools; and gender-sensitive conflict analyses and political economy analyses. Our clients range from intergovernmental organisations including the UN, (i)NGOs and non-profit organisations.

You will also offer technical support and guidance to our Conflict & Peacebuilding research team through matrixed working methods. This role also includes substantial travel, up to 2-3 months per year.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Research

  • + Plan and manage all stages of research and evaluation projects, leading: methodological design, implementation (including qualitative and quantitative data collection), analysis, and reporting, ensuring that deliverables meet expectations and deadlines
    + Support the Head of Gender & Inclusion to manage multiple concurrently-running projects, balancing competing deadlines and internal resource requirements; this includes acting as the team lead on 1-2 projects at a time
    + Support the Head of Gender & Inclusion and wider team in identifying appropriate research designs and methodologies to understand questions of interest, and develop/tailor appropriate corresponding tools and approaches
    + Engage with, and adapt, new research practices and approaches, and participatory research tools and methods applied in development research
    + Deliver in-person trainings, validation workshops and dissemination events to clients, including (as required) training on matters including gender mainstreaming
  • Project and Organisational Leadership

  • + Support on the identification of tenders and development of proposals, including researching clients, existing programmes, and development topics
    + Build positive working relationships with external stakeholders, including potential partner organisations, senior members of academic institutions, and local CSOs, where necessary
    + Assist in the development of internal knowledge and practices regarding gender analysis and assessments, and write blog posts and website content on relevant matters to support in the development of Bodhi's external profile
  • Team management

  • + This individual may take on the line management of 1-2 junior team members

  • Qualification and experience

  • Masters degree in Gender Studies, Development Studies, International Relations, or a related discipline

  • Conceptual understanding of gender and inclusion, in particular key gender-related concepts and terms including: gender mainstreaming; socio-ecological model; the gender equity continuum and how it applies in development-humanitarian-peacebuilding work; gender-sensitivity; feminist research approaches; localisation within the context of research and evaluations; common gender assessment tools including the UNFPA-UNICEF Gender-Transformative Accelerator Tool and the CARE Gender Marker

  • Substantial thematic interest and experience in gender, the inclusion of marginalised groups within development-humanitarian-peacebuilding work, conflict, peacebuilding, climate change, governance, migration, and/or the triple nexus

  • At least 7 years of experience delivering gender analysis, gender assessments, or other relevant research in fragile and conflict-affected settings (FCAS)

  • Demonstrated fieldwork experience in FCAS environments

  • Good knowledge of data collection software and analysis packages (e.g., SPSS or NVivo)

  • Ability to cope well under pressure, and to occasionally work irregular hours to meet tight deadlines

  • Fluency in English. Ability to speak and work in Swahili, French and/or Arabic is desirable

  • Experience of delivering research and evaluations including quantitative data collection is highly desirable

  • Experience line-managing research assistants or junior researchers is highly desirable

    + Communication: Ability to communicate (verbal and written) confidently in English and to adapt to different audiences and cultural contexts
