Full Job Description

Based at London Blackfriars, you’ll be responsible for managing the examination and evaluation process for geotechnical assets, and acting as client for investment into the asset., As Senior Asset Engineer [Geotechnics] you’ll:

  • manage the examination and evaluation process for geotechnical assets, during the winter examination and evaluation period the engineer will have weekly contact with the examination contractor to monitor examination programme progress. The engineer will manage an asset engineer and will ensure the evaluation work bank is delivered, undertaking a proportion of the evaluation work bank on site, often lone working in remote areas of the rail network,

  • take an active role in managing the capital portfolio, ensuring that the available budget for asset renewal and refurbishment is spent to best effect to manage railway safety, performance and asset sustainability,

  • manage renewal projects from remit production, through to asset hand back, this involves regular contact with the internal project management department and their framework designers and contractors to ensure project outputs are agreed and delivered,

  • work with the wider team, the wider Asset Management department, and maintenance to ensure that the geotechnical asset is managed safely as part of the railway system, including managing the risk posed by an aging asset base, deferred renewals and severe and extreme weather

  • line manage a small team of asset engineers


  • You’ll need to be a graduate civil engineer, geotechnical engineer, geologist or similarly qualified professional with ground engineering experience.

    Ideally, you’ll be chartered or making progress towards chartered status and be able to demonstrate a clear understanding of asset management principles, and experience of asset management, particularly in the infrastructure sector would be advantageous.

The Southern Region has many critical assets including many rock cuttings, clay embankments and a variety of coastal defences including Folkestone Warren (a large landslide complex in Kent) and Hooley Cutting (a long deep cutting with extensive history)
