Full Job Description

We're passionate about improving the future for the people of Suffolk and the environment. If you are too, join us as a Safer Active Travel Project Officer and make a huge and meaningful impact. Your creativity and commitment will support the team in delivering positive, lasting change to groups and communities across the county.
Reimagine the possibilities.
Your role and responsibilities
Join our friendly, focused, and energetic team as we promote sustainable travel and enhance road safety. In this role, you'll have the chance to work across a range of exciting projects that touch on planning, road safety, and sustainable travel.
As part of our team, you'll engage with developers, schools, businesses, and community groups, empowering them to choose walking, cycling, and wheeling over the car for their local journeys. Your efforts will make it easier and safer for people to embrace more sustainable modes of transport, contributing to a greener and healthier environment.
Additionally, you'll take the lead in monitoring the travel plan process, collaborating with residential and commercial developers across Suffolk to ensure their commitments to sustainable travel are met. Your attention to detail and dedication will play a crucial role in driving positive change.
Collaboration is key in this role, as you'll work closely with internal and external stakeholders, including Public Health, Children & Young People, and the District Councils. Your ability to understand diverse perspectives will ensure that your work reflects the needs of all, fostering an inclusive approach to sustainable transportation initiatives.
If you possess initiative, creativity, and the ability to work with minimal supervision, this role will provide you with a fulfilling and successful experience. Join us in shaping a brighter, more sustainable future for our community, one step at a time.

You will need
- Ideally we'd like you to have qualifications to at least A level with experience in a role that required organisational skills or project working but if you can demonstrate that you have the passion and ability to do a fantastic job then we want to hear from you regardless.
- We need our projects to run smoothly and efficiently so you'll need to show that you're organised and can present complex information clearly and concisely.
- Our ideal candidate will have an enquiring and creative mind. You will add value to the wider work of the team through positive engagement across the many varied workstreams.
You can view a full list of requirements in the Job and Person Profile (docx). If you believe you can succeed in this role, apply. Even if you don't meet all requirements, still apply. We would appreciate the opportunity to consider your application.

The team
- Working within the wider Transport, Travel and Safety team, our team works in several key areas: we deliver Bikeability training to more than 3,500 primary school pupils across the county each year; we work with developers to ensure that new-builds give residents or employees the opportunity to travel sustainably; we deliver Road Safety education across the county; we are one of 11 authorities running a pilot programme around social prescribing which encourages and enables people in Ipswich and Lowestoft to become more active; we work with schools, community groups and businesses to enable people to travel actively for shorter journeys.
- We enjoy working on projects knowing that they support our council's aims to reach net zero and mitigate against climate change and that much of the work that we do also enables better physical and mental well-being amongst our communities.
- Our team is diverse with people from a variety of backgrounds and countries with differing abilities who all bring a unique and valued perspective to the work that we do. We want you to be an equally enthusiastic contributor to the life and work of the team.
- We work using a hybrid model that is part home-based and part office-based with regular 'team days' when we are all in the office together.

Empowering Everyone
We're big believers in potential, possibility and the power of different ideas. We're always searching for ways to encourage, respect and enable everyone to be the best they can be. We aim to include all communities we serve in our representation. To achieve this, we encourage applications from everyone.

Step 3 - Upload a supporting statement answering the following questions below (no more than 500 words per question). You should use the Supporting Statement template.
1. What is active travel and how can it positively benefit individuals, society, the fight against climate change?
