Full Job Description

Your primary responsibilities will revolve around managing the financial and commercial aspects of the projects. By collaborating with various stakeholders, you will contribute to the achievement of our objectives and the smooth operation of the alliance.

Other key duties will include:

  • Preparing and producing commercial reports, including AFC management, forecast vs actual cost variances, earned value management, and change management.


  • Engaging and collaborating with multiple alliance partners, fostering a win-win approach for all participants.


  • Emphasising and exemplifying appropriate alliancing behaviours and "best for project" approaches to support successful program delivery for the benefit of all alliance members.


  • Participating in and taking ownership of commercial activities during monthly project reviews.


  • Collating commercial information, fulfilling periodic reporting requirements, and providing accurate reporting outputs.


  • Managing sub-contract agreements.


  • Processing payments, providing reports, and monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs).


  • Supporting the wider project team in maintaining effective communication and collaboration across different disciplines within the alliance organisation and alliance partners.


  • Maintaining auditable records in alignment with governance and contract requirements.


  • Briefing the Project Manager on the bill of quantities, specification, and contractual implications of ongoing and new projects.


  • Monitoring costs against tender/contract specifications and agreements, promptly notifying the Senior Quantity Surveyor of any major problem areas.


  • Maintaining effective communication with alliance Commercial Leads, providing, and receiving costing information for ongoing contracts. Notifying alliance Commercial Leads of any variations to cost or specification and obtaining necessary authorisations.


  • Assisting the Senior Quantity Surveyor in the preparation of tender enquiries, responses, and determining the company's charging structures.


  • Undertaking other reasonable duties within the scope of capabilities, project needs, and the broader TRU East programme.


  • Attend project handover meetings and review and analyse project information in order to understand the contractual terms and conditions, tender allowances, key risks and mitigations to support forming strategies for delivery.


  • Administration of cash out of the business utilising the companies costing and reporting system in line with payment performance monitoring requirements.


  • Responsible for raising periodic applications/invoices to maximise cashflow under the terms of the contract and expedite the receipt of cash.


  • In conjunction with the Project Manager, identify, record, and work to mitigate project risks and establish any opportunities for cost saving / margin improvement.


  • Provide support and guidance to junior members of the commercial team including line management duties.


  • Feedback of Contract performance to Work Winning.


  • Feedback on Supply Chain performance to the Procurement department.

    Considerable and demonstrable experience in a commercial role is an essential requirement for this role. You will ideally be educated to degree level or equivalent in Quantity Surveying, will have worked closely with both clients and suppliers and will have managed the interfaces within project teams.

    Additionally, you will have the following experience/skill set:
  • Proficient in MS office applications (Microsoft Word & Excel)


  • Influencing and negotiation skills


  • Ability to work effectively under time constraints and competing priorities


  • Be able to maintain good relationships with experienced managers and leaders.


  • Excellent communication, numeracy & literacy skills.


  • Analytical approach to problem solving


  • Full UK driving licence

    An opportunity has arisen for a Quantity Surveyor to join the TRU East Alliance, one of the most significant rail projects in the North of England. This position is based at the project hub at Gascoigne Wood, near Sherburn in Elmet (LS25 6JE) with travel across multiple sites between Leeds and York.
