Full Job Description

This is the time for action - we need to move at pace and reform our energy system - to deliver energy security, to tackle climate change and to protect our people., Tackling climate change is the biggest challenge facing our generation and we need to deliver a cleaner, greener, energy system to support the UK's 2050 net zero target. Strategic Infrastructure (SI) is responsible for the delivery of 17 new major transmission projects in the UK, as well as other strategic projects to help us deliver on our net zero ambitions and help the UK Government meet its target of 50GW of renewable energy by 2030.
This role will provide technical leadership to one of the multibillion-pound HVDC projects within the SI portfolio and deliver successful outcomes. As a Technical Lead you will be responsible for coordinating all technical matters (including substations, HVDC converters, marine and onshore cables, civil engineering, interfaces and risk) on the project and oversee day-to-day engineering activities, in some cases with our Joint Venture partners.
This role requires a diverse engineering background and a good appreciation of multi-discipline project delivery. It will require the management of opportunity and risk, interactions with key stakeholders and subject matter experts, and excellent contract and communication capabilities.

The Project Technical Lead will be a considerate engineering leader who can deliver to scope safely, to the right level of quality on time and on budget.

  • Ensure robust and innovative engineering quality systems are in place through manufacturing assurance and on-site installation & commissioning.

  • Ensure that engineering risks are identified, mitigated, reported and tracked.

  • Act as a project technical lead and provide direction to the engineering team for the project.

  • Work with partners, subject matter experts and Project Directors to ensure successful project outcomes.

  • Manage engineers across a variety of disciplines and coordinate with contractors, internal assurance, test and commissioning resources.

  • Translate engineering business needs to the project ensuring this is results in high quality technical outcomes.

  • Manage any necessary technical escalations, consulting with key internal stakeholders & specialists.

  • Support National Grid's relationships with key external project stakeholders (landowners, regulators, and suppliers).

  • Share knowledge and experience to benefit the wider portfolio.

  • Provide advice and briefing to senior managers and project directors.

  • Demonstrable capability in managing engineering safety, quality, cost and risk.

  • Experience of working with suppliers, commercial teams and project delivery functions.

  • Delivering complex engineering projects.

  • Able to think beyond convention; employing ways of working and engineering practices to achieve high quality outcomes and to solve project delivery issues.

  • Significant, demonstrable technical experience in project delivery.

    A competitive salary between £68,000 - £80,000 dependent on capability.

    As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus of up to 15% of your salary for stretch performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
