Full Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Project Controls Engineer/Planner to join our team in Newcastle. The role is to provide planning & scheduling support to the Project Controls Manager and wider Project Management Team and will involve working on a portfolio of engineering and construction projects in various sectors including Pharma, Healthcare, Government, Data Centres among others.

As a consultancy, Gleeds provide our professional services to a range of clients their needs are very specific, therefore we work in a capacity to support our clients and assist them in a range of project controls focused outputs. Our potential new colleague should be proficient in planning software specifically P6 and have experience using Asta and Microsoft Project. Experience in Power BI and data analytics desirable but not essential.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Implement planning & scheduling processes for a portfolio of projects.

  • Understand and follow the Planning Procedure.

  • Understand and use the software, systems and related tools.

  • Understand the schedule update & backup requirements and cycles.

  • Ensure project schedules are stored correctly and named appropriately in the project SharePoint sites.

  • Ensure monthly updates of all schedules are completed before the end of the month for reporting.

  • Reporting is maintained for own projects and reports are up to date.

  • Coordinate with PMs and project teams to establish specific project responsibilities.

  • Develop and implement a detailed planning approach for projects.

  • Lead the development of conceptual schedules, where necessary.

  • Lead the development of detailed project schedules, including baseline schedules.

  • Lead interactive planning sessions with project teams and other stakeholders, as necessary.

  • Understand and implement time risk management, ensuring it is appropriately implemented.

  • Perform technical schedule analysis (review of float, logic, etc.) for the schedule as well as updates and revisions during the life of the project.

  • Regularly report against project progress and ensure schedule information is included in project reports.

  • Review schedules from Contractors and supply partners to integrate into project plans.

  • Ensure planning and scheduling deliverables from Contractors are of the right quality and present appropriate information to describe the Contractors' plans to execute the work.

  • Lead regular project site visits to review compliance and progress against the plan and define corrective actions as required. Propose different priority of activities as appropriate, and review with the project team.

  • Review project and contractor changes for appropriate schedule impact; ensure contractors are incorporating changes appropriately in schedules and the overall plan.

  • Work closely with the PM, QS and the broader project team to ensure project cost and time KPI's are achieved or improved.

  • Resource and cost load schedules, when necessary.

  • Coordinate with the project QS to ensure cost / schedule integration.

  • Understand and assist with earned value / progress measurement systems, reflecting productivity trends, as necessary.

  • Assist in managing, controlling and tracking the project cashflow against the baseline budget.

  • Proactively review NEC Contractor Programme submissions and feedback to PM on appropriate response.

  • Proactively manage and report on the Contractor Programme Management, using CEMAR when necessary.

    Experience, Knowledge and Key Skills


  • Essential
  • Experience in projects and/or construction management.

  • Experience in project controls - planning and/or scheduling.

  • Thorough knowledge of critical path method (CPM) scheduling.

  • Experience using Primavera P6, Asta and Microsoft Project.

  • Experience in various software systems including Microsoft Office.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including presentations and reports.

  • Collaborative work ethic

  • High energy, passionate advocate of the Project Control processes.


  • Desirable
  • Knowledge of NEC contracts and other contract forms.

  • Experience of contract tendering and administration.

  • Understanding of cost control and estimating.

  • Power BI/Data Analystics, Degree (preferable) in an engineering/construction related subject with 3 to 5 years related experience., Risk management

  • Good facilitation and analytical skills.

  • Ability to deliver results on time, on budget, and to the high standards.
