Full Job Description

  • Matrix managing a number of Product Owners and Senior Product Owners on an operational and day to day basis

  • Responsible for planning and aligning the output of multiple Product Owners and Senior Product Owners to deliver cohesive Data & Analytics Products.

  • As a Product Owner Lead, the role holder will be a specialist in Data & Analytics solutions understanding how data solutions are designed, built, and delivered., Accountable for providing subject matter expertise for Data product or group of Data products to a number of Product owners

  • Accountable for the day to day matrix management of a number of Product Owners and Senior Product Owners ensuring cohesion and alignment to create a joined up singular super product.

  • Accountable for championing assigned Product or a range of products as an effective ambassador and subject matter expert ensuring sponsors and stakeholders have appropriate visibility of product development progress

  • Ensure compliance and adherence to agreed principles of Agile software development across Data & Analytics - creating and maintaining the product backlog, defining the acceptance criteria, sequencing and prioritisation of stories, ensuring stories are appropriately scoped and that developers have the correct understanding of what is required to be built.

  • Work closely with development team to prioritise product backlog according to business needs and ensure valuable releases

  • Coordinate with technical delivery manager and other delivery teams to ensure that work is correctly sequenced and prioritised to avoid delivery conflict in terms of integration points and the release calendar

  • Be available and decisive when working with delivery teams as product owner. Help educate them with the best possible information and enable those teams to progress

  • Communicate product features articulately to confirm the needs of users and allow development teams an accurate understanding

  • Collaborate across Data & Analytics community to ensure that Agile processes are continually reviewed and improvements implemented.

    Expert in Data & Analytics development technologies and methodologies, in particular Agile with a thorough understanding of Scrum principles

  • Experience in and understanding of Data development and delivery

  • Expert in systems development technologies and methodologies, in particular Agile scrum

  • Certified Product Owner

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in relevant subject area or suitable systems analysis certification

  • Familiarity with using Team Foundation Server as an agile planning and tracking tool

  • Broad knowledge and understanding of relevant safety standards and quality legislation, technical standards, company standing orders and risk processes

  • Expert in system analysis and requirements gathering techniques


  • Skills:
  • Skilled at solving and communicating issues collaboratively, applying knowledge and technology to the full

  • An able manager and influencer of team and of specialist peers within the department, and of customers and business stakeholders at a project level; makes priority and acceptance decisions that influence the success of team objectives.

  • Skilled at multi-tasking and balancing a number of complex work activities including; requirements elicitation and management, interviewing skills, backlog refinement and estimation, prioritisation and acceptance management.

  • Excellent oral and written communicator, having good interview and other interpersonal skills. This includes the ability to present and describe complex technical information in a way that non-technical stakeholders can assimilate the key points, as well as being able to present business value descriptions of requirements to a highly technical developer audience


  • Experience:
  • Strong previous experience in a Senior Product Owner role in an agile development team collaborating with multi vendor teams to incrementally deliver systems that are to specification

  • Experience with delivering a product in Data & Analytics

  • Experience of operating in a dynamic working environment, handling multiple tasks and deadlines, delivering to time, budget, and quality

  • Experience or in-depth knowledge of an aspect of the public transport operating business (both operational and non-operational) desirable.

  • A thorough understanding of agile principles
