Full Job Description

The School of Archaeology is looking to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) in Archaeology of the Late Bronze-Iron Age Mediterranean. The PDRA will be responsible for gathering, collecting and analysing data from primary resources to be used in agent-based modelling. The focus will be on evidence for sailing, fishing and trade at sea, and the facilities for revictualling and repair at ports and within small coastal communities. You will work closely with team members to develop a model of the intersection of sailing and fishing communities. As well as specializing on an area of Mediterranean Late Bronze -early Iron Age archaeology, the successful candidate must be familiar with wider Mediterranean archaeology and the issues and debates current in maritime trade. This will involve gathering data from source material written in a variety of modern languages. This post is a fixed-term contract for 3 years. It is a full-time position.
Reporting to the Principal Investigator, you will work closely with team members to develop a model of the intersection of sailing and fishing communities. As well as specialising in an area of Mediterranean Late Bronze - early Iron Age archaeology, the successful candidate must be familiar with wider Mediterranean archaeology and the issues and debates current in maritime trade.

The post holder should hold, or be close to completion of, a PhD/DPhil in the archaeology of the Late Bronze or early Iron Age Mediterranean, with a specialism in either the eastern, central or western Mediterranean. You should have a good understanding of areas of the Mediterranean, with experience in collating and analysing data from excavation reports. You should also have reading knowledge of at least one of the following languages: French, German, Greek, Italian or Arabic. You will have the ability to manage your own academic research and contribute ideas for new research projects. You will also have excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publications and present research proposals and results.
