Full Job Description

Governors and Trustees of New College Durham Academies Trust are seeking to appoint a Pastoral Support worker at Catchgate Primary School.

Under the direction of the Head Teacher the Pastoral Support Worker will oversee elements of:

  • SEND

  • Behaviour & Attendance

  • Safeguarding

  • Pastoral Support to the school community


  • The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate a sound understanding of key issues within education and within the locality. Resilient and dynamic in approach the successful candidate must be a highly organised and motivated individual. This post is an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to make a valuable difference to the children and families of Catchgate Primary School., Organise and deliver the behaviour support function across the school under the direction of the SENCO. Work with individuals or groups of pupils in class.

  • Take the lead/support other staff with pupils who display challenging behaviour. Assist in maintaining good discipline of pupils throughout the school.


  • Plan and implement strategies to support pupils in their social development and their emotional well-being, dealing and following the school policies on reporting concerns and issues daily.


  • Communicate with teachers and parents about behaviour and patterns of behaviour noted from records.


  • Liaise with external agencies as required and attend a range of meetings including TAFs, CiC, Child Protection meetings. Producing written reports and sharing information at meetings.


  • Update chronology files and online systems to reflect daily contact with pupils and services.


  • Act as Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead under the direction of the Head Teacher.


  • Be responsible for pupils who are not working to the normal timetable.


  • Escort and supervise pupils on planned visits and journeys.


  • Provide individual support or activities for students in danger of becoming disaffected or disengaged, in lessons, during break times, lunch times and on educational visits as appropriate.


  • Issue, review and report on children with home/school diaries and behaviour charts.


  • Co-ordinate daily and weekly behaviour statistics in accordance with the school's behaviour policy. Maintain records of behaviour rewards and sanctions awarded by school staff, including co-ordinating special message home, yellow and red cards, time outs, texts home.


  • Provide regular reports to the Head Teacher and a termly written report to Academy Committee.


  • Recognise and challenge any incidents of racism, bullying, harassment, victimisation and any form of abuse of equal opportunities, ensuring compliance with relevant school policies and procedures and making sure the individual/s involved understand it is unacceptable.


  • Produce termly certificates for children who have maintained positive behaviour.


  • Provide support and assistance for children's pastoral needs, for example, dressing, caring for sick, injured or distressed children.


  • Understand and implement school child protection procedures and comply with legal responsibilities.


  • Undertake the role of Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead.


  • Provide short term cover for classes - both in planned and unexpected non-timetabled sessions.


  • Plan, prepare and deliver learning to individuals, small groups and/or classes modifying and adapting activities to advance pupil learning.


  • Provide support to pupils in more specialist areas of learning, for example specialised behaviour intervention.


  • Develop effective professional relationships with colleagues, knowing how and when to draw on advice and specialist support from others.


  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff to support students in their learning and the preparation of learning resources.


  • Contribute to the development of classroom support staff and teaching support staff as required.


  • Supervise the use and care of the school building, fixtures and equipment by the pupils and to ensure their adherence to relevant health and safety regulations.


  • Take reasonable care of own health and safety and that of others and informing relevant staff of any concerns


  • Operate at all times within the policies and procedures of the Trust.


  • Set a positive example to students in work ethic, conduct, dress code, punctuality and attendance.


  • Participate in the comprehensive assessment of students to determine those in need of particular help. Monitor and evaluate responses and progress against action plans through observation and planned recording, feeding back to appropriate staff.


  • Take part in annual staff performance review with line manager.
