Historic England have a fantastic opportunity for you to join us as our Partnerships Team Leader as part of our Partnerships Team.

As a Team Leader you will lead our Partnership Team in collaborating with people and partners to secure vibrant and sustainable futures for historic places. In particular, you will ensure investment in heritage at risk in ways which maximises its wider value to society. You will support the organisation's objectives to help historic places thrive, connect communities through heritage, and inspire and equip people to actively participate in supporting the places they care about. Your work will reflect our ethos of constructive conservation. You will develop the capabilities and manage the workloads of staff, ensuring knowledge of and compliance with agreed practices and standards. You will ensure that the team engage where our expertise will add most to public value, and that the team also support the wider Regional Teams and other colleagues in the advancement of Historic England's objectives across the South West of England.

What you will be doing

To be a constructive member of the regional Leadership Team, delivering group targets as they apply and liaising closely with regional Leadership Team colleagues to ensure that the Region functions efficiently and effectively.

To be an effective advocate for the sustainable management of the historic environment, by fostering and maintaining relationships with key sector partners locally:

develop and sustain Historic England's relations with a wide range of relevant partners

champion historic places, buildings and sites, both as a cultural resource and as an asset for social and economic well-being

advise and assist local communities on the strategic planning and implementation of sustainable change to realise the potential of historic places to serve as a catalyst to public value

deliver to agreed timescales and to excellent customer service standards.

To take overall responsibility for the implementation of identified heritage at risk activities in the region, either directly or by delegation and coordination:

to develop, oversee the implementation of, and monitor regional heritage at risk work, in collaboration with the Business Management Team

to work with owners, communities, local authorities, building preservation trusts, and funding bodies, to promote the repair and reuse or sympathetic management of heritage assets at risk

to assist local authorities in the use of their powers to safeguard the significance of heritage assets at risk

to oversee liaison with specialist advisers from other groups (QS, Engineers, Development Economics, Legal, etc.), commissioning research, survey work and other studies, etc., as appropriate

to ensure the updating of the HAR Register, including provision of case studies;

to assist with the Business Manager's exercise of delegated responsibility for the grants budget.

To take responsibility for regional capacity building within your team:

ensure the development and delivery of training to increase the level of skills and knowledge of those involved in the management of the historic environment (for example, local communities, local authorities and Heritage Champions)

take delegated responsibility for the capacity-building budget.

To liaise with staff delivering regional communications and quality assure the regional content.

To lead and manage a team of Historic Places Advisers, Architects/Surveyors, Architectural Investigators and Project Officers:

develop capabilities

manage workloads

ensure knowledge of and compliance with agreed practices and standards.

To assist, and ensure that the Partnerships Team staff assist, the wider work of the Regional teams and other colleagues in the advancement of Historic England's objectives across the South West of England.

To undertake any other reasonable duties commensurate with the grade and competencies required of the post requested by line management.

As a manager, ensure our legal obligations and the expectations set out in our policies are met, including health & safety, equality & diversity, finance, procurement, information security and managing people.

Please note that the role:

requires regular travel to sites not serviced by public transport.

may require visiting/inspecting sites which is likely to require climbing scaffolding and negotiating confined space (e.g. church roofs, etc.)

may require occasional attendance at community meetings which are usually held at evenings or weekends.

Training, experience or qualifications in leading and motivating a team and demonstrating capability in performance management

Substantial experience of project management, including related to the management of the historic environment

A proven track record of working constructively with local authorities, community groups and other organisations

Ability to manage budgets effectively and efficiently

Educated to degree or equivalent level in a relevant subject

Constructive and creative problem-solving skills that demonstrate good negotiating and influencing skills
