Full Job Description

The Library would like to recruit interviewers to support the Jukebox: emblem of youth in post-war Britain Project, a collaborative venture between the University and local charity, .

Thanks to players of the National Lottery, the Jukebox Project is an outstanding artistic and heritage programme which will celebrate the boom in youth culture which followed the introduction of the jukebox to post-war seaside towns in north-west England. It will feature fun, artistic, heritage and participatory events, a touring exhibition and unique displays reflecting on the boom in youth culture during the 1950s and 1960s.

You will meet inhabitants of Morecambe, Blackpool and Lytham St Anne who experienced this boom first hand to capture their memories for future generations. You will be actively involved in documenting this influential period in 20th century social history to create a research resource. You will also have the chance to take part in the wider activities of the project., The Interviewers will be a key part of the Jukebox Project which will be carried out across 2024. Their main role will be to conduct and process interviews with people who experienced first hand the boom in youth culture which occurred in the 1950s/1960s.

Tasks will include:

  • Taking part in training from the Oral History Society on conducting oral history recordings on campus.

  • Interviewing project participants about their memories of Jukebox culture of the 1950s/1960s in regional location.

  • Processing the interviews to make them accessible for the use of the project and future archive collection. This will include carrying out sensitivity checks and editing the recordings.

  • Involvement in wider engagement events associated with the project.


  • All interviewers will be DBS checked and be required to sign a copyright and confidentiality agreement. The interviews and engagement events will be conducted at locations in Lancaster, Morecambe, Blackpool, and Lytham St. Annes. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.

    This role may require the candidate to be able to conduct work or attend events in the local region around Lancaster during the summer vacation.,
  • Excellent communication skills, and able to communicate to a wide range of people.

  • Competent IT skills (Word, Excel).

  • Interest in the history of popular culture in the UK, especially mid 20th century.

  • Key Information

    Training will be provided to support the interviewers to learn the skills required for the role. The skills they develop during the project will be transferrable to future employment. They will also gain experience of the processes required to conduct interviews for research which will be transferrable to future research projects. This study has been reviewed and approved by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Lancaster Management School\'s Research Ethics Committee.
