The Director of Submarines is accountable for generating the in-service SM Force Elements at Readiness and key enablers required to deliver Defence tasking which includes the UK’s independent Continuous-at-Sea-Deterrent (CASD), Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance, Anti-Submarine Warfare and Strike. This requires interface with organisations and sites across the Defence Enterprise, including Navy Command, Portsmouth and His Majesty’s Naval Bases in Devonport and Clyde conducting military operations, submarine maintenance, decommissioning and through life asset management of support infrastructure.
The Director of Submarine’s Health, Safety and Environmental Protection Manager role is an exciting opportunity for you to play a key role in establishing, maturing and delivering the Directorate’s Safety and Environmental Management Plan across a significant portfolio of activities in generating the in-service Submarine Force.
Operating within the Submarine Director's Portfolio Office, this role is the lead interface into the Director Submarines’ HS&EP Cell.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week., As the Director of Submarine’s Health, Safety and Environmental Protection Manager you will be responsible for:
Ensuring the Directorate's SEMP(s) meet the requirements of Defence policy and Regulations for HS&EP, and where necessary, lead in the generation/maintenance of this legislatively compliant document on behalf of the Accountable Person(s).
Ensure significant environmental impacts are quantified, monitored and action taken to improve performance.
To ensure compliance with MOD Policy and regulatory requirements.
Define and oversee a Hierarchy of HS&EP policy and documentation appropriate to the organisation; track and record any delegations.
Be the HS&EP Advisor to Director Submarines through management of the Safety Cell and act as the point of professional knowledge and expertise on HS&EP.
Act as the principal interface for engagement with the Defence Maritime Regulator (DMR), overseeing delivery of Safety Assurance functions which are ISO 9001/45001 compliant.
Direct and oversee a programme of 1st and 2nd Party Assurance activities within the Submarine Directorate ensuring any shortfalls oversee the administration of Correct Actions.
Act as lead for recording and reviewing the Directorate’s HS&EP risks in the Navy Command risk management tool and provide termly reporting to Deputy Director Submarines.
Co-ordinate support for the Deputy Director’s Safety Working Group and Termly Board, and subsequently prepare Directorate’s input to Navy Safety and Environmental Board (NSEB).
Act as the Directorate’s lead interface with the Navy Safety Centre and participate as an active member of the Safety Community of Practice.
Support the delivery of Learning from Experience (LfE) within the Directorate and across the Submarine Enterprise.
To act as the line manager for the subordinate position - Health, Safety and Environmental Protection Assurance Officer (HEO)
