Full Job Description

The CAA medical department is a multidisciplinary team who regulate and implement medical requirements for professional flight crew, private pilots, air traffic controllers and cabin crew. The team includes 9 full time doctors who make medical certificatory decisions, develop medical policy, provide oversight of aeromedical examiners and have an educational role. We are looking for aviation and space medical professionals to work with us and build this team.

In this role, you will be involved in a wide range of medical assessment, certification, oversight, policy making and training activities. This means that you will undertake case assessment, conducting associated correspondence duties as well as participating in appeals and enforcement activity. Oversight activity involves the auditing of aeromedical examiners using the electronic medical records data in combination with site visits. Education includes teaching doctors training in aviation and space medicine, as well as the community of aeromedical examiners. Work is conducted in a hybrid manner using our offices at Aviation House and remote working. You will have the opportunity to integrate with all manner of partners and stakeholders, embedding you within the heart of this exciting field of medicine.

You will have a chance to demonstrate your knowledge and expertise at the highest level both nationally and international. Our work includes collaboration with international bodies, other national aviation authorities and advising industry and UK government. You will also have a chance to shape the next generation of aviation and space medicine professionals in the UK.

  • GMC (General Medical Council) Licence to Practice

  • On UK GMC Specialist Register or UK GP (General Practitioner) Register

  • Experienced Aeromedical Examiner, Consultant, or specialist in Occupational Medicine (MSc/Advanced cert Occ Med), or equivalence

  • An interest and understanding of the flight environment and flight operations

  • Knowledge and experience in occupational medicine (in the airline or related industry) or aviation and space medicine (as an AME, medical assessor, and/or working in aeromedical retrieval/repatriation)

  • Education and training experience desirable

  • Previous quality assurance or policy making experience advantageous
