Full Job Description

As a Mechanical Commissioning Engineer, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. Throughout the submarine program the commissioning group demonstrate that the complex systems meet the design intent and are safe to operate.

Our main aim is to deliver a safe submarine to the highest possible standards, well beyond what is normal in most industries.

Day-to-day, you'll be supporting commissioning activities to ensure the systems perform to the highest standards of safety.

  • You will be carrying out a range of commissioning activities including inspections, trials and testing

  • Defect identification and proposing corrective solutions where required

  • Recording of defects and deficiencies ensuring that all emergent work is correctly recognised

  • You'll maintain close working relationships with the other commissioning group sections

  • Ensuring that all activities conform to professional engineering standards, quality, nuclear and submarine safety constraints


  • This position involves working in confined spaces. Candidates must be able to work comfortably and perform tasks in restricted spaces.

  • This position involves working at height. Candidates must be able to work safely and perform tasks at varying heights.


  • This role is full time 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.

    Essential experience of the Mechanical Commissioning Engineer
  • Experience within mechanical engineering industry

  • Knowledge of control of work and safe isolation of mechanical systems

  • Good planning and organisational skills

  • Self-motivated and flexible approach to problem solving.

  • There may be a requirement to work within radiological controlled areas.


  • Qualifications for the Mechanical Commissioning Engineer
  • NVQ level 3 or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline and have significant demonstrable commissioning experience


  • Security Clearance
    The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and maintain Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) security clearance for this role.
