Full Job Description

Whipps Cross University Hospital, part of the Barts Health NHS Trust Group is looking for a full time Consultant Physician in Acute and General Medicine to fulfil a 12-month fixed term post. You will be joining a department that currently has 10 Consultant Acute Physicians.

The post offers an exciting opportunity to join a growing team and to develop new models of working and services that support all patients attending the hospital and within the local community. We are building a new hospital as part of the Government's new hospital programme, so this is an exciting opportunity to play a role in developing the department and wider services for the future.

You must hold full registration with the General Medical Council and be on the Specialist Registrar or within 6 months of obtaining CCT.

Barts Health will employ the successful candidate as a full time 10 PA consultant. It is anticipated that the typical split of duties would be 7.5:2.5 DCC:SPA in the first instance. The appointee will have an on-call commitment of one in every 27 weekday nights, to see acute take patients from 1700-2100 and then be on-call from home until morning post-take ward round 0700-0900. There is a 1 in 20 weekend commitment to cover the General Medical On-Call. There is a 1% on call supplement (Category B, low frequency) for on-call work out of hours from home.

The medical take numbers are variable at Whipps Cross, and can be between 40 to 70 patients over a 24-hour period. The Acute Medicine consultant looks after patients under 80 years old, and the consultant on-call for Older People's Services (OPS) is responsible for patients over 80 years old, which comprise approximately one third of the medical take.

There will be prospective cover built into the rota, and there will be consideration of time off in lieu (such as for weekend working). The on-call medical consultant is supported by three medical SpRs during the day (two for the take, one for the wards 9am-9.30pm), and two SpRs during the night. There are teams of IMT 1 & 2 and FY-level junior medical staff for each on-call, managed by the registrars. The department of acute medicine currently consists of 4 to 5 doctors at SpR grade (3 deanery trainees), 17 SHOs and two FY1s rotating through the acute assessment unit (AAU), with 29 inpatient beds.

Barts Health is one of the largest NHS trusts in the country, and one of Britain's leading healthcare providers.
