Full Job Description

The Department of Histopathology is looking for an experienced locum Consultant to join their team for a period of 4 months. The role is for 10 Programmed Activities (PA's) and we welcome applications from a Consultant Histopathologist with expertise in primary Lymphoma (solid tissue only) pathology along with skin pathology.
The medical establishment is made up of 10 consultant Histopathologists, with junior support from the deanery rotation and clinical fellow post.
The appointee will be based at The Christie and together with colleagues already in post and will provide senior input to all Lymphoma histopathology work to meet the needs of the service. The successful applicant will share the diagnostic workload with the other consultant histopathologists and give input into the relevant multidisciplinary team meetings (MDTs)., The Department of Histopathology provides diagnostic tumor pathology services to the Christie NHS Foundation Trust. This includes handling biopsies and surgical specimens from the theatres, wards, and out-patients within the hospital, as well as reviewing pathological materials from other hospitals in the North West for cancer patients referred by clinical, surgical, and medical oncologists.
The GM-HCDP service (Lymphoma) also receives diagnostic case material from GM Trust and in-house generated samples, with plans for further onboarding of external GM Trusts. Clinical reporting involves the use of both the local LIMS (TDHC) and the HODS regional LIMS haemato-pathology platform. It is important to note that all neoplastic myeloid pathology is reported elsewhere, so participation in reporting these samples is not required.
There is no on-call rota or requirement for weekend work., The medical establishment is made up of 10 consultant Histopathologists, with junior support from the deanery rotation and clinical fellow post.

The appointee will have office accommodation and access to a secretarial service at the Christie.
Diagnostic histopathology
The Department of Histopathology provides diagnostic tumour pathology services to the Christie NHS Foundation Trust:
a) biopsies and surgical specimens from the theatres, wards and out-patients in the hospital
b) pathological material for review from other hospitals in the North West for cancer patients referred to the clinical, surgical and medical oncologists. The GM-HCDP service (Lymphoma) similarly receives diagnostic case material from within GM Trust and in-house generated samples. Further onbaording of external GM Trusts is planned. Clinical reporting inlcudes use of both local LIMS (TDHC) and HODS regional LIMS haemato-pathology platform (note, all neoplastic myeloid pathology is reported elsewhere and participation in reporting of these samples would not be required.
Consultation is also provided on problematic cases, referred by other histopathologists within, and occasionally outside, the region.
There is no on-call rota or requirement for weekend work.
The Histopathology service is managed in accordance with the Strategic Review of Pathology Services, notably in relation to paragraphs 4.22 - 4.26.

PATHOLOGY SERVICES
On 21st June 2014, The Christie NHS Foundation Trust entered into a partnership with Synlab UK Limited, the UK division of one of the largest European independent providers of pathology services, to provide and develop Christie pathology services.
The consultant histopathologists are directly employed by The Christie NHS Trust and provide their service to the Christie Pathology Partnership (CPP)
The on-site Christie Pathology Partnership services comprise of:

o Haematology
o Blood Transfusion
· Stem Cell Processing
· Breast Tumour Receptors (regional service)
· Mortuary & Bereavement services
Other services, such as Microbiology, Virology and Cytology are contracted services that are performed off-site.

HISTOPATHOLOGY
The Department of Histopathology provides tumour pathology diagnostics and staging. Specimens are derived from two main sources: (a) biopsies and surgical specimens from theatres, wards and outpatients in the hospital and (b) pathological material for review from other hospitals in the North West region, for cancer patients referred to the Christie's surgical and medical oncology clinicians.
A consultation service is also provided on complex or problematic cases, referred by other histopathologists within or outside of the region.
The department supports and trains up to 3 Specialist Registrars from the North West rotation and have recently created opportunity for clinical fellow positions in the department., CPP Consultant Clinical Scientist
Deborah Seals

Biochemistry provides a rapid turnaround of routine biochemistry profiling. Specialised testing, reflecting the patient population of this tertiary center include tumour markers, hormone assays including dynamic function tests, therapeutic drug monitoring, protein electrophoresis and immunofixation.
Haematology provides a rapid turnaround for routine full blood counts and coagulation screens. A haematological diagnostic immunophenotyping service is provided. CD34 counts - pre and post stem cell harvest - are provided for the stem cell team.
NB: The Haemato-Oncology team for leukaemia, myeloma and transplantation consists at Consultant level of eleven Clinical Haematologists (within Cancer Networked Services)

The blood transfusion laboratory provides a full cross matching and blood component service to support patients undergoing surgery and chemotherapy.

The Stem Cells laboratory service supports the stem cell transplant / bone marrow transplant programme based on the Haematology Transplant Unit (HTU). The Stem Cell Laboratory carries out processing, quality assessment, cryopreservation, storage and distribution of human progenitor cells (HPC), from Peripheral blood and bone marrow, and Donor lymphocytes (TCT), under license from the Human Tissue Authority.
Breast Tumour Receptors

The breast tumour steroid receptor and prognostic marker assay service undertakes IHC analyses of Oestrogen receptor (ER) and Progensterone receptor (PgR) to help determine the likelihood of response to endocrine therapy.
Other prognostic factors such as MIB-1 (Ki67 Antigen) Measurement of proliferative activity, EGFR (HER-1) Epidermal Growth factor I, marker of poor prognosis and C-erbB-2 (HER-2/neu) Epidermal Growth Factor II, marker of poor prognosis, are also undertaken.
FISH tests are provided for the detection of HER2 gene abnormalities in breast and gastric tumours (HER2-FISH)..
Mortuary & Bereavement services

The Bereavement service provides the care and administration services for the mortuary. This includes facilitation of the medical certification of death and arrangements in line with the national Medical Examiner process including the arrangements for post mortems. The mortuary has facilities for bariatric bodies; a facility that is used by several organisations. across the region.
ACTIVITY
HCDP case activity on average is 100 cases/month (predominantly lymph nodes, along with splenic/other organ site biopsy FFPE samples).
FACILITIES
The appointed consultant will have their own office, a modern microscope with facilities for photomicrography and a computer for their individual use. The computer will have internet access and a Trust e-mail address will be provided. The Department of Histopathology has a commercial IT system (Technidata - TDHC), and the regional haematopathology LIMS platform (HODS)which links with the hospital IT system (Medway). Teleconferencing links are in place.
APPRAISAL
Appraisal of consultant medical staff in the Directorate is conducted on an annual basis. Consultants will be allocated an appraiser by the Director of Pathology, but may request an alternative appraiser from the group of Trust appraisers should they so wish. The appraisal summary and personal development plan (PDP) are forwarded annually to the Medical Director by the appraisee. Annual review of the consultant medical staff job plan and PDP is undertaken by the Director of Pathology and Service Manager for Clinical Support Services. Job plans need to be signed off by the Director of Pathology, the Medical Director and the Deputy Chief Operating Officer.
EQA
The consultant histopathologists participate in the North West Region Histopathology general EQA scheme and several specialist EQA schemes. The appointee will be expected to participate in the relevant national EQA schemes. The laboratory participates in the UK NEQAS for cellular pathology technique and immunocytochemistry schemes.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
All the medical and technical staffs employed by the Trust are expected to comply with the hospital's health and safety policies. There is a departmental health and safety committee which compiled a departmental H&S policy and oversees all aspects of H&S within the Department. The laboratory manager acts as Safety Supervisor for the Department.
CLINICAL AUDIT
Both Intra and Extra departmental audit is regularly undertaken. The Consultant histopathologists, along with the laboratory manager, are responsible for organizing the intradepartmental audit.
The appointee will be expected to take part in clinical audit activities.
The department is UKAS accredited to ISO15189:2022 standards. UKAS reference number 8697.
MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE
The appointee will be accountable to the Clinical Director of Pathology (currently Dr Phil Monaghan). Line management is provided by the Service Manager for Clinical Support Services (Mrs Jeni Carden-Jones).
The post of Director of Pathology is determined by agreed fixed term appointment (not by rotation). The Director of Pathology is, in turn, accountable to the Deputy Chief Operating Officer for Cancer Centre Services.
The role of the head of the department (Clinical lead) is held on a rotational basis and is Dr Pedro Oliveira.
Continuing Professional Development
The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and surgical colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.
Job Planning
The job plan outlines the requirements of the post and may be altered by agreement and in response to service needs with the Divisional Clinical Director and Service Manager and will be subject to an annual review in line with Trust policy.
The annual review will examine all aspects of the job plan and should be carried out jointly by the Clinical Director, Service Manager and the postholder. This review will also include an assessment of professional development and defined goals for the future.
