Full Job Description

This position is for a full-time legal counsel position to primarily support all Shell companies that have real estate interests within the UK (including Scotland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man). Shell's real estate portfolio is diverse and includes petrol filling stations, pipelines, tank farms, aviation facilities, Upstream facilities and offices. The businesses that this role supports are fast evolving and present exciting opportunities to contribute to Shell's role in the energy transition. Property support is required for the roll-out of innovative services for existing and new Mobility customers including the acceleration and growth of Destination and On-the-Go EV charging and hydrogen offerings on Retail sites and other New Energies projects.

As Legal Counsel, you will be part of a broader team of lawyers based in the UK, as well as Europe, who collaborate to offer a variety of businesses within Shell real estate legal advice in support of their business initiatives. The team in the UK includes 2 other real estate lawyers and 1 deeds administrator.

More specifically, you will:

  • work with other legal staff, Real Estate and across business lines and teams as business needs and priorities require

  • assist and support the Litigation team in relation to property litigation matters

  • work to deliver improvements and efficiencies in ways of working for UK Property

  • propose and help implement legal resourcing plans and legal improvements

  • facilitate sharing of team learnings and experiences and packaging knowledge for collective improvement both in the UK and cross jurisdiction to get the best business outcomes

  • embed LSD ways of working principles, including a focus on E&C, HSSE, and DE&I

  • ensure E&C and other appropriate controls are effectively embedded in business and legal practices and processes; and

  • instruct and manage outside counsel as required (some work is outsourced)

    You will have to be an English qualified lawyer with:

  • Experience in English property law, with commercial landlord and tenant experience, including drafting and negotiating new leases, lease renewals and property consent documents and experience reviewing complex legal titles (including unregistered land).

  • Experience of planning and environmental law.

  • Ability to think strategically and to appreciate both the immediate and longer-term impacts on the business of different courses of action.

  • Demonstrable Learner Mindset and a willingness to work in new areas.

  • Ability to address issues creatively and sensitively and to build strong networking relationships across a range of internal and external organizations.

  • Ability to adapt and prioritize and work with both internal and external stakeholders with diverse backgrounds.

  • Demonstrable track record as a team player, as well as an ability to work independently and to effectively manage a varied case load.

  • Good risk and reputational management skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
