Full Job Description

Our Lab Technicians play a crucial role in our laboratory operations, focusing on the accurate and efficient execution of DNA library preparation and sequencing. Lab Technicians are responsible for preparing samples and sequencing DNA samples, ensuring the integrity of data, engaging with customers on technical issues, and overseeing daily operations of the lab., Sample Preparation:

  • Prepare DNA samples for sequencing using established protocols and molecular biology lab techniques

  • Open received packages; log in samples to website; identify and resolve issues with packages

  • Make minor adjustments in reagent combinations and quantities to ensure high-quality and quantity DNA samples for sequencing


  • Instrument Operation:
  • Operate instruments, including DNA sequencing instruments, liquid handling instruments, and similar technologies

  • Load samples into robotic units and adjust settings for appropriate processing of the DNA samples

  • Monitor instrument performance, troubleshoot issues and perform routine adjustments for optimal functionality


  • Results Analysis:
  • Review sequencing output to confirm normal operation and valid results

  • Assess causes of poor results and determine what modifications can be made to deal with complex problems such as contamination, reagent issues, or source sample problems

  • Implement quality control measures to assess the integrity and purity of DNA samples and verify the accuracy of sample information

  • Work closely with bioinformaticians to transfer raw data and assist in the interpretation of sequencing outcomes


  • Compliance and Documentation:
  • Adhere to laboratory safety protocols and maintain compliance with relevant regulations and standards

  • Document all experimental procedures, observations, and results accurately


  • Customer Technical Support
  • Working with the global customer support team, review and respond to customer emails related to order processing and results

  • Investigate customer technical issues, providing advice, solutions, or clarifications related to sample prep, processing, and interpretation of results

  • Collaborate with staff across the company to improve or expand the services we provide the customers and enhance all aspects of their experience (e.g. logistics, customer service, website interface, bioinformatics tools, etc.) taking on special projects as needed


  • Lab Management and Safety:
  • Assist with lab management tasks such as monitoring inventory levels, ordering supplies, daily opening or closing of facilities, vendor management, documenting safety or process protocols, and other administrative functions as assigned

  • Participate in team meetings to achieve common research goalsand contribute to the continuous improvement of lab processes

  • Train new and junior staff members through formal training trips, on the job training, and giving technical talks

  • Any other functions or projects, as the needs and interests arise, as assigned by supervisor

    Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, or a related field

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience with DNA extraction, purification, and/or sequencing techniques

  • Familiarity with Oxford Nanopore and related technologies

  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work independently

  • Proficient in basic laboratory techniques and good laboratory practices

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work in a collaborative team environment

  • Physical requirements include: Must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time. Must be able to frequently lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects and inventory in the lab. Requires substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Requires close visual acuity to perform an activities such as: pipetting; viewing a computer terminal; preparing and analyzing data and figures.
