Full Job Description

The Acute Medicine team at the Royal London Hospital is looking to appoint an outstanding individual to the post of Sister/Charge Nurse within the Acute Admissions Unit (AAU).
Closely supported by a team of 3 Band 7 Senior Sisters/Charge Nurses and working together as part of a large team of Band 6 Sisters/Charge Nurses, we will help you to develop your role as a leader within the exciting field of acute medicine. We admit patients directly from A&E and ambulatory care to our 52 bedded AAU and aim to provide an exceptional standard of care whilst maintaining the flow of patients throughout the hospital.
You will work closely with our dedicated team of 12 acute medical consultants as well as teams from all other medical specialties. We are able to provide level 1A care for more acutely unwell patients and have 8 beds with cardiac monitors. We also have a specialist frailty team who provides care for up to 10 patients within the AAU.

As a proficient practitioner in adult nursing, the post holder acts as a professional role model and clinical teacher.
They provide effective mentorship and preceptorship, participating in the education and training of nursing and non-nursing staff.
They will take charge of the Acute Admissions Unit as required, liaising closely with the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse to ensure effective and safe patient care., Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates care for patients with complex
needs and make changes as necessary.

  • Identifies deteriorating patients and takes appropriate action to manage the

  • situation, liaison with interdisciplinary team as appropriate.
  • Ensures documentation is accurate and up to date, utilising the electronic, Educates patients and relatives about how to adopt healthy lifestyles, and

  • look after their own health and wellbeing.
  • Identifies and helps patients, relatives and staff to reduce any risks associated

  • with health and wellbeing.
  • Ensures patients' views are taken into account in the decision making

  • process.
  • Ability to lead and participates in collaborative decision making within the

  • inter-disciplinary team.
  • Participates in meeting the health education and promotes the needs of

  • patients and carers.
  • Communication is a fundamental process to ensure continuity and high

  • standards of care. It includes sharing ideas, information and feedback in
    order to empower patients and members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Skilled in communicating with a range of people on a daily basis some of who

  • may have communication barriers.
  • A key responsibility will be to utilise a variety of strategies to communicate

  • effectively with patients and those involved in their care.
  • The post holder must also communicate with other staff within the Trust, with

  • external organisations and with the general public.
  • Keeps accurate and complete records of activities and communications

  • consistent with legislation, policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of research, audit and quality

  • initiatives and how this influence nursing practice.
  • Support the ward manager with performance management of key indicators

  • such as health and safety, ward accreditation.
  • Support the ward manager in investigating and responding to accidents,

  • complaints, untoward incident and other significant events.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills related to evidence based practice.

  • Monitors the quality of own works and alerts others to quality issues.

  • The post holder must at all times carry out duties and responsibilities with
