Historic England have a fantastic opportunity for you to join us as our Historic Environment Record Officer as part of the Greater London Archaeological Advisory Service Team.

The Greater London Archaeological Advisory Service Team supports the management of change by providing access to information relating to the historic environment of London. The team maintains and develops the Greater London Historic Environment Record in line with national standards and benchmarks, ensuring that it contributes to the effective use of the planning system at strategic and local levels, and provides advice to owners and others on the sustainable management of the historic environment.

As part of this team, you will assist the HER Manager by continuously maintaining and developing the Historic Environment Record (HER) for London in accordance with the London HER Development Plan. You will contribute to promoting and ensuring accessibility to the London HER to foster understanding and promote good stewardship of the historic environment of the capital, including responding to enquiries for searches of the record and assisting with the management of volunteers.

What you will be doing

To assist the HER Manager with building effective working relationships with historic environment specialists and other partners to identify relevant sources of information relating to the historic environment, and ensure that it is incorporated into the London Historic Environment Record.

Working with the Greater London Archaeological Advisers and other partners to negotiate the acquisition of appropriate data for inclusion in the Record.

To assist with the implementation of the London Historic Environment Record Forward Plan by ensuring that prioritised information is interpreted appropriately and entered accurately onto the record using informed and accessible language in line with defined data standards and guidelines.

To reply to enquiries and requests for information relating to the Historic Environment Record, applying any charging regime in accordance with agreed protocols.

To supervise volunteers, including placement students, to the HER in collaboration with the HER Projects Officer.

To support proactive engagement with the community to share information and promote the value of the historic environment as part of the HER Development Plan.

To be an effective advocate for the benefits for local places of conserving heritage assets.

To undertake any other reasonable duties commensurate with the grade and competencies required of the post requested by line management.

Please note that this role will require occasional attendance at community meetings which are usually held at evenings or weekends.

Educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant subject or significant experience in a relevant field

Experience of working with Historic Environment Records including problem solving within a historic environment context

Developed ICT skills in databases and GIS systems, including ability to accurately input and check computer data

Able to clearly, accessibly, and rapidly synthesise information relating to the historic environment

Understanding the role and future development of Historic Environment Record Services

Ability to manage competing work priorities, Disability Confident
