Full Job Description

Under supervision and at a level appropriate to the role and stage of training to carry out such tasks as:

  • Subject to the direction of the Team Leader, being responsible for such general and specific areas of work that may be allocated within the team.

  • Developing strong and effective links within Legal Services and support services and with customers across directorates.

  • Ensuring all correspondence and miscellaneous enquiries are dealt with and actioned as appropriate.

  • Taking instructions from and advising Elected Members and Officers of the Council, its partners and clients on legal issues.

  • Drafting and/or negotiating correspondence and legal agreements and notices.

  • Liaising with clients and other third parties in writing by telephone and face to face.

  • Representing and negotiating on behalf of the Council in various meetings and panels.

  • Undertaking legal research tasks and providing briefings on legal issues.

  • Accurately recording time worked.

  • Completing the Level 7 Solicitor Apprenticeship Standard and contributing to your own training and development needs and taking opportunities made available to meet those needs.

  • Conducting all work in accordance with Practice Management Standards laid down by the Law Society (Lexcel) and all other departmental and performance standards.

  • Any other appropriate duties as and when required.

  • Level 7 Solicitor Apprenticeship Standard

  • Solicitor Qualifying Exam (SQE) 1 - Level: 7 (non-degree qualification)

  • A mixture of Teams training and day release


  • Please note that qualification as a Solicitor requires attainment of SQE 1 and SQE 2. SQE1 is gateway competence and SQE2 will form the End point Assessment under IFATEs regulatory aligned EPA policy.

    Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the End-Point Assessment., Communication skills, IT skills, Attention to detail, Organisation skills, Problem solving skills, Administrative skills, Analytical skills, Logical, Team working, Initiative, GCSE or equivalent English (Grade Grade A-C or 4 and above) Essential
    GCSE or equivalent Maths (Grade Grade A-C or 4 and above) Essential
    A Level or equivalent Three and can be in any subjects (Grade C or above) Essential
    Other Law degree (Grade 2.1) Essential
