Full Job Description

  • To make a significant operational contribution to the provision of the technical

  • support service within the School and Faculty.
  • To support the delivery of practical demonstrations, including timetabled

  • sessions, to aid provision of equipment and other resources required.
  • To ensure optimal use of the School's technical facilities and expertise,

  • ensuring effective support of timetabled sessions to guarantee appropriate
    access to all service users.
  • To be proactive in the evaluation of existing technical resources (equipment,

  • kit, processes, etc.) with regard to their application within the School.
  • Investigating and evaluating opportunities arising from new equipment, kit,

  • processes, etc. and advising senior School staff on their appropriateness in
    supporting the day to-day operations of the School.
  • Supporting the Teaching Support Officer to structure and provide content for

  • practical sessions. Supporting development of lesson plans, teaching
    materials and exercises to support practical classes and sessions for
    academic staff.




  • The delivery of practical demonstrations, including the demonstration of

  • processes and techniques. Applying and sharing a working knowledge of
    theory and practise with students.
  • Involvement in the assessment of students, under the guidance of Teaching

  • Support Officer and academic staff.
  • Liaising with academic and support staff to develop the use of technical

  • resources and expertise in the curriculum.
  • Supervision, training and development of staff and students in an area of

  • technical specialism, including provision of inductions, refresher training, staff
    development activities, etc.
  • Planning, organising and supporting exhibitions, displays, events,

  • conferences and other School activities as required by the Teaching Support
    Officer or nominee.
  • To be responsible for the cleanliness, care and maintenance of designated

  • technical areas.
  • The purchasing of consumables, equipment, and management of designated

  • budgets, including charging for facilities, services, processes and materials.
  • To support the Teaching Support Officer in the proactive management of

  • health and safety, disseminating information and reports to staff and students
    and ensuring that all operations within the area of technical specialism comply
    with University health and safety policies, procedures and codes of practice.
  • The monitoring of plant, equipment and processes within the School to ensure

  • they are maintained as required by any relevant statutory provision, and that
    staff and students are suitably informed, instructed, trained and supervised in
    their use.
  • To ensure that a high standard of housekeeping is maintained in the

  • workshop and studio areas.
  • To engage in the use of facilities, equipment and staff expertise to support the

  • achievement of enterprise targets and other core aims of the University's
    Strategic Framework.
  • Routine administration, maintenance, stock controls and audit of equipment

  • and materials.
  • Liaison with academic staff, technicians and other Faculty staff, sharing and

  • disseminating good practise.
  • Any other duties commensurate with the grade as deemed necessary by

  • Teaching Support Officer or nominee.

    Post Specific Duties:

  • To support the Teaching Support Officer to teach Fab Lab users how to

  • design, prepare and make using various 2D/3D design software, digital,
    fabrication equipment, CNC machines and related technologies including
    emerging technologies and equipment.
  • To work to an appropriate level to aid the delivery of teaching support

  • workshops and demonstration of Fab Lab technologies using various 2D/3D
    design software including Tinkercad, Fusion 360, Blender, Cura, Artec Studio
  • To support delivery of learning activities, providing expert guidance and

  • technical advice to students in the area of 2D/3D software design, digital
    Fabrication, CNC Machinery, 3D Scanning, Electronics, XR technologies,
    robotics and Biomaterials, helping students to identify and supply appropriate
    techniques, processes, materials, resources and equipment to meet learning
    outcomes.,
  • To assist the Teaching Support Officer in the day-to-day running of the Fab

  • Lab workshops including the use and booking of specialist facilities i.e., Fab
    Lab and Laser Cutting within timetabled teaching sessions.
  • To assist in the provision of formal or informal sessions to students that may

  • include, demonstration, instruction with a process/technique, coaching with
    the development and proficiency of a particular skill, technique or process
    within the area of the Fab Lab.
  • To support the Teaching Support Officer in carrying out research in the area

  • Digital fabrication and related technology to support the ability to diagnose
    and resolve problems of a highly technical, complicated nature, that involves
    testing and re-testing scenarios and processes to lead to the successful
    design and achievement of intended learning outcome/execution of work.
  • Contribute to the wider activities of both the Fab Lab and LJMU to engage

  • with the wider Fab Lab Network and the Fab City Initiative (including
    promotional events, student recruitment, student induction and student
    support.
