Full Job Description

This is an exciting time to work for Gloucestershire Constabulary. The nature of policing is changing continuously, challenging how we operate. These changes are shaping how we look now and in the future - though our commitment to keep people safe from harm and to make a positive difference to their lives remain at the heart of what we do.

One way we do that is by developing and delivering communications to reach and involve our communities, including the media, partner organisations, and local residents, as well as other important stakeholders. Every day we make headlines, appeal for information or let a range of people know about our work and services.

To help us, we're seeking a talented communications professional to be our External Communications Manager. It's an important and challenging role at the centre of our work to maintain the public's trust and confidence. It includes planning, implementing and evaluating clear, timely and two-way communications through multiple channels, writing compelling content, and delivering effective outcomes for our objectives.

We want someone who will thrive in a fast paced environment where no two days are the same, and who can identify solutions to improve the way we work. From managing complex, sensitive issues to supporting colleagues on the frontline or senior officers, you'll be there to advise and offer practical help.

We're looking for a dynamic and supportive leader, who can inspire the External Communications team and other colleagues to deliver a great service to people in Gloucestershire. You'll be joining like-minded and highly skilled professionals in the Communications and Engagement department who work in campaigns, face to face and digital engagement, internal communications and events, design, print and other communications activities. Some of them provide services to the Office of Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC).

If you're interested, you'll need a relevant communications qualification, proven communications experience, and a great knowledge of media law and social media guidance, particularly about defamation, Contempt of Court and privacy issues. You'll have experience of developing and implementing communication plans to manage complex, high profile, fast moving or sensitive issues and scenarios effectively, and a clear understanding of what helps organisations develop trust, confidence and satisfaction among local communities and other stakeholders. You'll be able to write clear, crisp and accurate copy for a range of audiences, and have a proven ability and confidence to make decisions and operate at a strategic level, as well as previous management experience

Interviews to be held on 11 June 2024
