Full Job Description

To provide efficient and effective caretaking support to the Kindergarten and Infants' School, ensuring that the cleanliness, maintenance and appearance of the buildings and the surrounding areas are maintained to the required standards.

Core Duties:

Caretaking

  • Assist teaching staff, parents and visitors with appropriate tasks as requested.


  • Undertake a schedule of daily tasks, which will include unlocking, and setting up/down tables and chairs etc.


  • Supervising the car park in the morning and afternoon to ensure the safe movement of vehicles.


  • To be responsible for ensuring clear and safe pedestrian access to the school and associated grounds, particularly in adverse weather conditions (e.g. snow clearing, gritting, removal of animal faeces, litter etc).


  • To accompany, where necessary, personnel visiting the school such as contractors and representatives of utilities.


  • Keep bin areas tidy and organised.


  • Move food deliveries from store cupboard to kitchen.


  • To carry out a range of tasks such as moving furniture, undertaking office moves, setting up meeting rooms and distributing supplies.


  • To collect milk and mail on a daily basis and distribute accordingly.


  • Maintenance
  • Undertake low risk, low level maintenance tasks as directed by the Head of DUCKS. This would include first line maintenance of fixtures and fittings e.g. tightening of screws.


  • To log maintenance tasks on the Help Desk in a timely manner


  • Liaise with the Maintenance department to determine appropriate access for repairs as required.


  • Report emergencies in the case of faults with gas, electric and water supply to the Head of DUCKS, Maintenance Helpdesk and Director of Estates as first points of contact.


  • To ensure gullies, drains etc. are kept free from debris and that their parts of the College and grounds are litter free. Dispose of waste materials in a safe and hygienic manner ensuring that it is made available for collection as required.


  • Cleaning
  • To carry out emergency cleaning during the working day that might result from an incident or spillages and may include faeces and vomit, or any other substance which may constitute a hazard or safety risk.

  • Control the provision of various consumables as required by DUCKS Staff. These may include items such as hand sanitiser, toiletries, washing tablets, fabric softener etc.


  • Resupply WCs with toilet paper, hand towels and soaps throughout the day using stock provided by the cleaning department.


  • To liaise with the Head of Cleaning to provide support as required, specifically periodic holiday cleaning tasks e.g. floor scrubbing and carpet shampooing.


  • Health and Safety
  • To log health and safety tasks on the Help Desk in a timely manner.


  • To escalate immediate concerns, including security concerns, to the Head of Facilities or in their absence to the Security Manager.


  • To provide safe means of protection in the event that a hazard has been identified.


  • To complete relevant Incidents or near-miss reports using the College reporting system.


  • Act as incident controller to collect Zone check sheet and liaise with Fire brigade and Security in the event of a fire as per the DUCKS emergency evacuation plan.


  • To follow COSHH regulations.


  • To comply with the requirements of Dulwich College Health and Safety procedures, Policies and other relevant legislation.


  • Additional Duties:

    · To act as an ambassador for the College, taking pride in the upkeep and maintenance of the DUCKS buildings and the surrounding areas.

    · To undertake any reasonably required duty as requested by the Head of DUCKS or the Head of Facilities.
