Newent Doctors Practice has an exciting opportunity for a Dispensary Manager to join our expanding doctor's practice in Newent, which is just 8 miles from the city of Gloucester on the edge of beautiful Gloucestershire. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to join a small team of senior staff who are responsible for ensuring the effective and smooth running of the practice., We are looking for an experienced Dispensary Manager to work 30 hours per week, who ideally has leadership experience to co-ordinate and lead our team of 5 dispensary staff. You will oversee the day to day running of the dispensary and support delivery of an excellent and well-established service to our patients. The post holder will work hands on as a dispenser with their team with some dedicated dispensary management time., The post holder will be responsible for the safe, accurate and efficient dispensing of medication to the entitled patient population, providing advice and support for both patients and colleagues. In addition, the post holder will be required to manage the dispensary staff and support the multi-disciplinary team in line with the strategic objectives of the practice., The following are the core responsibilities of the Dispensary Manager. There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

a. To be responsible for planning and allocating work for all dispensary staff

b. To oversee all dispensing matters within the practice, checking colleagues' dispensing as required

c. To dispense prescriptions for patients

d. To collect prescription charges from patients, cash up and balance monies received

e. To cross reference number and value of prescription charges against statements, ensuring accuracy

f. To effectively coordinate the requests for repeat prescriptions via telephone, email, online and over the counter

g. To ensure requests for repeat prescriptions are processed within a 48-hour timeframe

h. To manage the return of medicines from patients

i. To deal with uncollected medication in accordance with current policy

j. To effectively manage stock levels within the dispensary, ensuring adequate levels are held, minimising wastage and expenditure

k.Ordering supplies of drugs to ensure adequate stock levels are maintained.

l.Develop and implement standards set in Standard Operating Procedures

m. To promote a safe and effective working environment, conforming to legislation, ensuring drugs are stored appropriately within temperature parameters and securely

n. To effectively manage the cold chain process, ensuring all staff are aware of the requirement to accurately record temperatures and store items appropriately

o. To conduct stock takes in accordance with guidance

p. To process invoices for payment, liaising with the finance assistant as required

q. To assist with QOF targets

r. To be responsible for the effective line management, appraisal and development of dispensary staff

s. To work with a clinical supervisor to take responsibility for developing own clinical competence, leadership and reflective practice skills within the workplace

t.Undertake training to keep up to date with advancements in dispensary system.

u.Develop and introduce new systems and facilitate change when required

v. To co-ordinate and ensure compliane with the annual DSQS process

The post holder will have a recognised Dispensary Qualification (Pharmacy Technician or Level 2/3) and ideally you will have gained the Accuracy Checking Technician (ACT). You will have experience of working in a Dispensary/Pharmacy/General Practice environment with a proven experience of leading staff., Skills Essential

  • GCSE (or equivalent level) English and mathematics at grade C or above.

  • A recognised Dispensary Qualification (Pharmacy Technician or Level 2/3)

  • Knowledge of pharmacy service procedures including GDP, enhanced services, falsified medicines directive etc.

  • Evidence of commitment to continuing professional development

  • Higher level qualifications (e.g. A Level, Level 3 or degree).

  • BTEC or NVQ Level 3 in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent

  • Accredited Checking Pharmacy qualification (ACP)

  • A qualification in management

  • Registered with GPhC as a Pharmacy Technician

  • Member of the Association of Pharmacy Technicians (APTUK)

  • Good clinical system IT knowledge of EMIS/SystmOne/Vision

  • Experience of working to policies, guidelines and Operating Procedures.

  • Experience of audits and quality improvement activity

  • Experience of resolving complaints

    Newent Doctors Practice is a ten General Practitioner Dispensing practice with approximately 11,900 patients. We have a team of 42 staff, including Receptionists, Dispensers, Nurses, Healthcare Assistants and Phlebotomists, Clinical Pharmacists, First Contact Physiotherapist, Secretarial and Administrative Staff, Reception Manager, Operations Manager and Practice Manager.

    30 hours ideally over 4 days per week; Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.


  • Salary: £26,162.66 (Pro Rata which equates to £20,930.13 for 30 hours per week)

    Monday 8:30-16:30

    Wednesday 8.30-16.30

    Thursday 10.30-18:30

    Friday 8.30-16:30

    There will be opportunities for overtime to cover staff holidays and sickness.
