Full Job Description

As the Director of Legal and Compliance at Hometree Group, you will lead and enhance our compliance culture and legal frameworks across all brands. Your role involves ensuring that business innovations comply with legal standards and safeguard our customers' interests.

Over time, you will also build and lead a small legal and compliance team to enhance our organisational practices. Reporting into the CFO, we seek a candidate with at least 12 years of experience in legal and financial services compliance to effectively guide these initiatives.,

  • Legal and Compliance Strategy: Develop and embed a comprehensive legal and compliance strategy covering a complex array of legal and FCA regulatory requirements, ensuring the right infrastructure is in place to support Hometree's scaling efforts without compromising compliance.

  • Regulated Entities Oversight: Take direct responsibility for our regulated entities, ensuring robust governance, policies, processes, and systems are in place to maintain compliance while achieving business goals. Prepare to take on SMF responsibilities as the role evolves.

  • Leadership and Team Development: Build and lead the Legal and Compliance team, enhancing their capabilities to support Hometree's growth. Recruit and provide leadership to individuals with compliance roles across the business, fostering a strong culture of compliance.

  • Strategic Projects and M&A Support: Provide legal and compliance insights for critical projects including M&A execution and integration, new product development, and regulatory license applications, aligning them with legal standards and business objectives.

  • Commercial Legal Support: Oversee commercial legal support across the organisation, ensuring all business dealings maintain legal integrity and contribute to Hometree's strategic goals.

  • Corporate Governance: Manage the company secretarial and governance needs, including share schemes and supporting the evolution of the company's legal structure to ensure regulatory compliance and alignment with business strategies.

  • Ad Hoc Corporate Legal Advice: Advise on ad hoc corporate legal or regulatory issues affecting the business, such as directors' duties and other corporate governance matters.

  • Process Improvement and Team Training: Initiate and lead improvement initiatives to put in place processes and tools that promote efficient delivery of legal support and foster cross-functional collaboration. Train and educate the Legal and Compliance team and other functional teams on corporate legal matters, enhancing their understanding and execution of legal responsibilities.

  • Regulatory Engagement and Reporting: Develop and maintain proactive relationships with key regulators such as the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), our Principal Firm, and, where required, insurance partners, ensuring Hometree's operations remain transparent and compliant. Lead regulatory reporting efforts to ensure accuracy and timeliness.

  • Technology Utilisation and Data Protection: Leverage technology to streamline compliance processes and ensure rigorous adherence to data protection regulations, particularly in consumer lending and financial services.

  • Ethical and Sustainable Practices: Promote an ethical culture that aligns with corporate social responsibility, especially relevant in green financing and installations, ensuring compliance extends beyond regulatory requirements to embody Hometree's values., Initial Call: Start with an introductory call with our Director of People and Culture to discuss the role and your potential fit. (30 mins)

  • Skills-Based Interview: Engage in a detailed discussion about your past experiences with our CFO. (1 hr)

  • Stakeholder Interview: Spend time with the Managing Director of Hometree Finance and our Chief Business Officer to explore alignment and expectations. (1 hr)

  • Task Stage: Present a task to our COO and CFO, showcasing your specific skills and approach to problem-solving. (1 hr)

  • Final In-Person Interview: Conclude the process with a face-to-face meeting with our CEO, focusing on your strategic vision and potential contributions to the company. (1 hr)

    Qualifications: UK-qualified lawyer with a minimum of 5 years PQE, ideally with in-house experience in a startup or scale-up environment.

  • Regulatory Knowledge: Deep understanding of FCA regulations such as CONC, ICOBS, PRIN, SUP, DISP, and TC, with the ability to apply these effectively within the business.

  • Communication: Strong communication skills to effectively liaise with regulators, senior management, and external stakeholders.

  • Commercial Acumen: Sharp commercial awareness to align regulatory requirements with business goals.

  • Negotiation Skills: Proficient in tactful negotiation, influencing outcomes while maintaining professional integrity.

  • Analytical Abilities: Highly analytical, capable of balancing legal risks with business interests under tight deadlines.

  • Leadership: Ambitious and driven, with a desire to influence the direction of the Legal and Compliance team and contribute to the company's growth and success.
