Full Job Description

  • Hydraulic evaluation of enquiries and orders

  • 3D CAD modelling & manufacturing drawings for new designs / R&D

  • R&D project planning, management, costing & results analysis

  • Mechanical calculations & FEA simulation

  • Completion of contract & inhouse documentation, Assist the Design Engineering Manager with planning, delivery & review of departmental workload and project objectives

  • Assess suitability of pump selections by reviewing test data against customer data sheets and project specifications

  • On-time delivery of new designs to operational departments in accordance with internal design reviews to meet production program

  • Create component, assembly models & drawings using Solidworks 3D CAD

  • Run R&D projects, in accordance with business needs.

  • Complete contract data sheets, curves and other supporting documents

  • Review pump pattern dimensional checks & resolve queries

  • Mechanically validate key component designs using Solidworks FEA

  • Analyse inhouse test data to assist with product improvement.

  • Create & manage design validation spreadsheets

  • Support suppliers & subcontractors to resolve design issues

  • Review industry standards and client specifications

    The Design Team are responsible for providing design support (hydraulic & mechanical) to the operations teams across the business. This involves analysing various hydraulic requirements and providing solutions within pre agreed guidelines, using historic test data and company experience. Hydraulic evaluation of customer enquiries and orders is a key part of the role, along with completing contractual documentation. The successful candidate will also be required to have 3D CAD modelling skills to enable them to create new designs and produce detailed manufacturing drawings. Other skills, such as using spreadsheets at an advanced level to assist with analysis, and assessing the mechanical integrity of components using FEA, would be beneficial. The role also requires running various Research & Development (R&D) projects, both project managing and hands on testing, as required.


  • The successful candidate will ideally have completed a degree in a mechanical engineering discipline, or be close to completing. They will have an analytical mind, possess good communication skills, both verbally and in writing, have good attention to detail and enjoy problem solving. Ultimately, the successful candidate will be capable of taking ownership of multiple tasks and bringing projects to a successful conclusion.

    This role will suit a person either currently supervising other engineers, or someone looking to develop themselves and grow into the role, in order to help the Company keep at the leading edge of technical excellence.

    Of high importance will be the ability to quickly influence and deliver performance through others by taking the lead by making effective decisions to drive things forward. Other significant skills include the importance of being planned, organised & driven, with good routine monitoring skills.,
  • Degree or equivalent in an engineering related subject

  • 2 years engineering design experience

  • A solid design background

  • Structural engineering, e.g Eurocode 3, ASCE 7, Seismic

  • Pumps or rotational equipment

  • 3D CAD

  • Commercial awareness

  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

  • Create / understand Technical drawings including tolerances, limits & fits.
