This role requires you to have lived in the UK for the last 10 years and obtain Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance. Clearance must be obtained without any caveats that prevent you from carrying out the role you have been recruited for. If it isn’t obtained or is obtained but with caveats that prevent you from carrying out the role, any conditional offer made to you will be withdrawn. Obtaining DV security clearance can be a lengthy process. You’ll join us once Security Check (SC) clearance is obtained, and then the more enhanced DV checks will continue after you’ve started your employment. If so, then this could be the ideal opportunity for you. The AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) Team are looking for an AUV Superintendent to join them as part of the wider SALMO department.
DE&S, Salvage and Marine Operations (SALMO), is the lead across the MoD for the provision of marine salvage and emergency response. Our team of specialists including Master Mariners, Marine Engineers, Naval Architects, Environmental Scientists, ROV Pilots AUV Operators and Divers provide a centre of expertise for subsea activities and marine operations. Our operations are varied and include: salvage assistance to damaged surface vessels, location of aircraft on the sea-bottom, survey of WWII wrecks, towage of warships and submarines, emergency response preparedness exercises and underwater engineering support to rectify defects on Navy platforms at home and overseas. We are a flexible, highly trained and multi-skilled team who are ready to respond at short notice worldwide.
The AUV team delivers discrete outputs within SALMO by using cutting edge commercial of the shelf (COTS) AUV equipment to provide UK defence with a Deep Water Survey Capability. As the AUV Superintendent you will be responsible for the safe delivery of AUV outputs.
You will act as the principal shoreside accountable person delivering SALMO's Deep Water AUV Capability. Ensuring our equipment, maintenance, spares and personnel, both onshore and offshore can meet the requirements of our customers. This will involve managing the SALMO AUV system operations with an offshore team; working closely with the AUV Party Chief, team of Surveyors, Analysists and Engineers to ensure all AUV equipment is working effectively and customer operational outputs are delivered. You will also liaise with the operations and shore engineering teams alike to ensure the team operates effectively.
This role is operationally important and as such attracts allowances (SALMO Terms and Conditions) depending on the working situation the employee is undertaking at that time.
We will provide you with the necessary training and help you on your journey to becoming an experienced AUV Superintendent.
What you’ll be doing
+ Be accountable as the Equipment Authority and hold the Safety Responsible letter of delegation for the SALMO AUV System
+ Provide engineering support to the AUV acquisition team to support procurement and upgrade activities whether through SALMO or external support partners
+ Own and maintain the SALMO AUV System Safety Case
+ Plan SALMO AUV system maintenance activities, spares management, management of financial in-year allocations, long-term planning of requirements and capability strategy
+ Supplying real time support to the deployed team and acting as stakeholder liaison/Designated Person Ashore during deployments
+ Generate the annual training/operational schedule in accordance with customer directives
+ Manage and execute the AUV team training plan and assessment of team competence
+ Manage the AUV teams evolving infrastructure requirement to deliver a safe building, equipment, and facilities for the AUV team to operate from
+ Supporting the Department Head in delivering the capability demanded under the Command Acquisition Support Plan with our customers
Note: Though the position is primarily shore based, there are occasions where you will need to deploy with the AUV team. On occasion, you may be called upon to engage in other diverse activity to support SALMO and wider defence outputs., + You will hold a relevant Level 6 (or higher) qualification in a marine or engineering subject, or equivalent relevant experience
+ You will have demonstrable offshore or technical/autonomous engineering experience
+ You will have experience leading and working together as part of a team
+ You will hold professional registration at Incorporated Engineer status or higher
This role is subject to Retained Grade Terms and Conditions and differ from the DE&S standard Terms and Conditions.

Due to the nature of this role, you are:
+ Be fit to pass and maintain a 2 yearly ENG1 seafarers medical (no geographical limitations)
+ This assignment is open to sole UK nationals only
+ Be required to enlist as a Royal Navy Sponsored Reserve
+ Be expected to work extended hours as and when required in support of operational commitments
+ Be required to live within 60 minutes travelling time of the base to which you are appointed. However, this is under review.
+ Have an in date current UK Driving Licence

Initially, you may be expected to attend more frequently to familiarise yourself with the site, the team, and your role.

£67,275 - £72,335
per annum (pro rata), plus additional allowances, generous benefits and an average 27% employer pension contribution. Existing civil servants should refer to the Further Information document for salary details.
