We offer a range of learning and development for all employees may you be clinical or non-clinical., We welcome applications for a new substantive Palliative Medicine consultant post (6.33PAs) to join our team of 5 consultants in Berkshire West/South Oxfordshire. A new substantive consultant palliative medicine posts have arisen due to expansion of our team with additional funding for palliative medicine consultant posts within the Royal Berkshire Hospital and rearrangement of existing consultant posts. The palliative medicine department provides specialist medical input across a broad range of settings, including acute and community hospitals (Royal Berkshire Hospital, West Berkshire Community Hospital and Wallingford Community Hospital), the specialist inpatient unit based at Duchess of Kent Hospice and community services in Berkshire West and South Oxfordshire., The successful applicant will be a Palliative consultant working in South Oxfordshire Community team. They will provide clinical leadership of the community teams working alongside another consultant and doctors. There is flexibility in the job plan to meet service delivery and management needs alongside the needs of the applicant. An interest in management or research would be welcomed and there are opportunities to develop our local and regional education and research profile.

  • Full registration with the GMC/eligible for registration Within 6 months of CCST in (Speciality) at interview date

  • Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom or equivalent

  • Higher degree e.g. PhD/ MD submitted/awarded


  • Clinical Experience, Knowledge & Skills

    Essential criteria

  • Fully trained in Palliative Medicine

  • Previous responsibility for clinical governance and GMC Good Medical Practice

  • All aspects of palliative medicine and patient care


  • Audit Management & IT

    Essential criteria

  • Ability to work within clinical governance guidelines

  • Undertake audits and present data as required

  • Good IT skills, use of patient and hospital database


  • Desirable criteria

  • Evidence of clinical leadership role demonstrating accountability for quality of care, financial controls and efficient management of workforce, Evidence or providing good teaching and supervision to trainees


  • Desirable criteria

  • Track record of publications in peer reviewed journals

  • Educational qualification, Contributes to improving patients experience

  • See patients as individuals and involve them in decisions about their care

  • Ability to work in partnership to deliver a patient centred service

    Community and Specialist Inpatient palliative care services are provided by Sue Ryder across Berkshire West and South Oxfordshire and consist of 2 specialist community teams, outpatient and day services and one specialist palliative care unit. Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice (DoK), a 15 bedded unit is regarded as the hub of the palliative care service in Berkshire West. There are also exciting developments as a result of the expansion of the Sue Ryder Oxfordshire Palliative Care service now providing a CNS rapid response and a Hospice at Home service and virtual ward across South Oxfordshire and 2 community inpatient beds at Wallingford Hospital. The consultant group also provide clinical support and leadership for up to 8 palliative care beds at West Berkshire Community Hospital.
