Full Job Description

North Somerset Libraries are looking for a Community Services Supervisor at Yatton Library, part of the Clevedon and Yatton library team.

About the role

We are looking for someone with a keen interest in library services who understands the library's role in the local community.

The successful candidate will be someone who can enable the library's contribution to key council priorities in supporting health and wellbeing, education, culture, and support for employment and skills.,

  • Management of the Yatton Library and Children's Centre building, working to ensure compliance with operational health and safety and other legal requirements.

  • Manage staff performance, including day to day supervision of work, regular 1 : 1 meetings and an annual appraisal process.

  • Operational tasks including compiling staff rotas, managing sickness and holiday absence, completing banking process, chairing monthly staff meetings, record keeping.

  • Efficient management of your own work, and that of your team.

  • Resolving queries, including supporting colleagues and customers with IT.

  • Coordinate library activities (e.g. Rhymetime sessions for pre-school children, Lego Club, digital support sessions) and facilitate delivery of partner events in the library building.

  • Oversee and coordinate promotion of library services within the growing Yatton community, including promotion of Extended Access membership (offering access to the library building during non-staffed times).

    Are you community-focused, and able to efficiently lead a team? Do you work well with colleagues, volunteers, and partners to provide excellent customer service?, Have significant practical experience of working with customers.

  • Have excellent customer care skills.

  • Have experience in supervising others.

  • Understand the services public libraries offer and their role within the community.

  • Understand the requirements for safe working practices, health and safety and management of a building.

  • Be able to efficiently organise their own work and that of their team.

  • Be able to present information clearly and have excellent communication skills.

  • Be able to collaborate with a range of colleagues and partners, including other library supervisors, Children's Centre colleagues, and local community groups.

  • Have a good knowledge and understanding of professional boundaries.

  • Experience of library work is desirable but not essential.

    This is a permanent role for 16 hours per week. Hours are worked over a two-week working pattern on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and alternate Saturdays.


  • Much of the work is office based, with some customer-facing work as required by the service. The postholder's main base will be at Yatton Library and Children's Centre in Yatton with some work at Clevedon Library.

    The postholder may also be required to work at other libraries across the district and visit a variety of venues on occasion.

    This position is exempt under the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions) Order 1975 and is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check .
