Full Job Description

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and forward thinking Learning Disability Nurse to join the Intensive Support Team (IST) in East & North Hertfordshire. This is a full time, 37.5 hours a week, permanent position, flexible over 7 days.

They will be passionate about learning disability nursing and be willing to actively participate in the continuing development of the existing nurse team and beyond this be able to work with the challenges of this developing service.

The successful candidate will be responsible for a clinical caseload, under the supervision of the Clinical Team Manager and will share responsibility for the support and supervision of junior staff in the team.

  • To maintain a personal and professional profile in line with NMC Revalidation requirements.

  • To maintain and promote practice within the Mental Health Act (1983), amended 2007, Mental Capacity Act, 2005 and Hertfordshire Safeguarding Adults frameworks.

  • To work within a Positive Behavioural Support Framework

  • To work with the clinical team and Team Managers to provide and ensure high standards of clinical practice and to seek continuous improvement through a culture of audit and learning.

  • To provide a person centred approach integrated within the care planning approach, which optimises integration into community life.

  • To be responsible for a caseload

  • Ensure the safe management of drugs and their administration, in accordance with legal, professional and Trust policies and procedure

  • To participate in and encourage service user involvement .

  • To develop and maintain a culture in which service users, supported by their advocates, where appropriate, are able to share in decisions, which affect their lives.

  • Carry out all responsibilities with due regard to the NMC The Code: Professional Standards of practice and behaviour.

  • Prioritise workload in order to ensure effective use of time and resources, seeking support from relevant team members as required.

  • To take a lead role in supporting student placements within the services.

  • To maintain appropriate records according to NMC Record Keeping & HPFT Data Quality policy and guidance

  • To act as a supervisor to junior staff members

    Applicants must have an awareness of the health needs of this service user group, have excellent communication and leadership skills, be keen to extend their skills in a supportive environment, and be able to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.


  • Applicants must possess proven skills in assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for people with learning disability and mental health needs, within current care philosophies for learning disability services.

    It will be necessary to practice in a variety of bases and settings and therefore they will need to be competent with prioritizing service user's needs within the legislative and risk assessment framework., Essential criteria

  • Registered Learning Disability Nurse

  • Mentoring / Practice Assessor / Practice Supervisor training


  • Desirable criteria

  • Additional areas of training through short courses

  • Post Graduation courses

  • Membership of professional bodies, At least 2 years experience working in an inpatient or community setting with service users who have a Learning Disability

  • Experience in working within Multi-disciplinary Teams and inter-agency working

  • Day to day management of staff at supervisory level.

  • Experience of working with service users with Challenging Behaviour, Epilepsy, and Mental Ill Health.


  • Desirable criteria

  • Experience / Knowledge of Positive Behavioural Support process, You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
