Full Job Description

Under the direction of the Headteacher, Caretaker will:

  • Be responsible for the care and upkeep of the buildings and grounds.


  • · To liaise closely and support the Headteachers and Office Managers in their objective of ensuring the efficient and effective day-to-day running, presentation and management of two Primary School sites, ensuring a warm, clean, safe and secure environment for all authorised users of the site and visitors.

    · To carry out school maintenance and repairs as directed by the Headteachers and Office Managers ensuring these works are carried out in accordance with the relevant Health and Safety legislation and to handle the day to day issues related to such works.

    · Be conversant with the Health and Safety policies relevant to the post including those relating to manual handling, working from height, control of legionella and fire safety.

    · Be able to attend relevant health and safety training as provided by the Schools in order to carry out the duties of the post.

    · Maintain site security including unlocking the site buildings as required and locking up at the end of the day. This includes setting building alarms.

    · Carry out any additional duties as required by the Headteachers or Office Managers.

    Main responsibilities and duties
  • Hanging shelving


  • Hanging display boards


  • Supervision of some maintenance contractors on site as directed.


  • Receipt and distribution of any ordered goods, materials and equipment for the School, checking delivery notes and ensuring staff receive goods ordered.


  • Prudent stock levels of necessary consumable items such as tissues, soaps, fluorescent tubes, batteries etc.


  • Responsible for the School's timely waste management collections including all recyclables.


  • The movement of furniture and the setting up and taking down of tables and chairs for special events, functions and meetings.


  • Manning the School entrance during school events, some out of hours working is expected.


  • Organising and logging information online using I am Compliant regarding:


  • · Water management records

    · Pest control records

    · Waste management

    · Energy usage data collection and record keeping

    · Regular Fire Alarm Tests and other tests.

    Key Holder

    The Caretaker will become a trusted 'Key Holder' for the Schools and expected to carry out any necessary duties that this may involve call out in the event alarms are triggered etc. The Caretaker will open up and lock up each school as required by the Senior Leadership Teams of both schools.

    Grounds
  • The Caretaker will be responsible for the general upkeep of the School grounds. This includes clearing the grounds of all rubbish, leaves and snow / ice as appropriate, and the maintenance of the wooden outdoor furniture and ensuring that all fire exit /escape routes are clear and accessible.


  • The Caretaker will ensure that all boundary areas / walls, entrances and exits are secure at all times.


  • The Caretaker will undertake pruning and planting periodically, as directed by the Office Manager and ensure that the flower beds are watered as needed.


  • Playground areas will be inspected daily.


  • Maintenance and Minor Repairs

    The following is a list of 'typical' activities to be undertaken by the School Caretaker. It is an indication as to the types of duties expected:
  • Repair door handles, door closures, shelving, display boards, locks, basic painting and decorating, window latches.


  • Repair of furniture, coat hooks, curtain rails and school equipment.


  • Fitting toilet roll holders, soap dispensers and paper towel mechanisms.


  • Ordering of basic stock - toilet paper, light bulbs etc.


  • Small plumbing jobs and replacement of tap washers, toilet seats/handles, plugs and chains to basins.


  • Change fuses up to and including 13 amps.


  • Water plants.


  • Temporary boarding up of windows, removal of dangerous glass, making areas safe in the event of a hazard arising.


  • Cleaning / Disinfections as needed during school day.


  • Additional responsibilities for Spaxton C of E Primary School:

  • Supervision of the Cleaner at Spaxton School and undertake any additional cleaning duties to support.


  • Hours of Work

    The Caretaker will be in attendance to do caretaking duties for an hour in total each day at Spaxton. Hours for Stogursey are flexible and arrangements of working pattern can be agreed with the Headteacher.

    At the start of each working day the Caretaker will be responsible for doing a site check alerting the Office Manager to any matter requiring urgent attention.

    · To undertake any other reasonable duties as directed by the Headteacher or Chair of Governors.

    Support to the School

    · Comply with and assist with the development of policies and procedures relating to safeguarding, reporting concerns to an appropriate person.

    · To attend all training as required

    · Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school.

    · Comply in all respects with the requirements of the Data Protection Act and maintain strict confidentiality. Data can be sensitive, as it can highlight the performance of individuals i.e. both staff and students.

    · Adhere to and promote the School's policies on Equality and Diversity.

    Attend staff meetings and staff development meetings when appropriate.

    Establishing and maintaining relationships with other school staff and where appropriate with parents.

    · Support the school's fire and emergency procedures by being familiar with the instructions for staff and children located in all the teaching areas and taking appropriate action should the need arise.

    · Have a commitment to Child Safeguarding, to promoting the welfare of children and young people in accordance with the school's agreed procedure.

    · Supporting the school's first aid procedures by reporting any and every accident/injury.

    · Part-time - 15 hours per week, term time plus 6 weeks (44 working weeks)

    · Hours: 3:30pm-5.30pm plus 5 hours (flexible)

    · Salary: Actual pro-rated salary £8,905 - £9,053 (based on Grade 15 full-time equivalent £22,737-£23,114pa)

    · Working across and travelling between two Trust Primary Schools - business mileage expenses payable in accordance with current HMRC rates,
  • Play a full part in the life of the school communities, to support their mission and ethos and to encourage staff and students to follow this example

  • Comply with the school's Health and Safety Policy

  • Uphold the principles of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and be aware that safeguarding is everyone's responsibility


  • Candidates must be eligible to work in the UK, and will be subject to relevant pre-employment checks including references and DBS clearance. Shortlisted candidates may also be subject to online checks as part of our safer recruitment procedures.

    Candidates will require a full UK driving licence and access to transport
