Full Job Description

Looking for a nurturing, fun carer to work weekends in Woodbridge with a cheeky and full of energy 8-year-old boy who has autism, epilepsy and learning difficulties.
The main purpose of your role will be to help me live life safely, while offering encouragement and helping with day-to-day tasks so I can have a good day. You will be expected to undertake lone work within the family home, but initially any trips out will be as a family until it is felt you can confidently meet my needs. You must be prepared to witness me having seizures even though this can be upsetting to experience. Your main duty when this occurs is to comfort me and time my seizures in case you need to administer medication, although this is unlikely. Flexibility is a must as my needs vary drastically from day to day.

Main duties will include:

  • Following my care plan and providing help if I have a seizure, including administering medication (though this is rare)

  • Helping me to dress appropriately for my day

  • Supporting me to access the community and have fun

  • Relaxing with me at home if I am having a bad day

  • Helping me make my meals if my family are not there

  • Help me to learn new skills

  • Reading to me or practising my letters

  • Playing games with me and being silly

  • Recognising when I've had enough and just need to relax

  • Using the seizure diary as necessary

    Reliable, honest, friendly, nurturing

  • GCSE or equivalent qualification in Maths and English

  • Physically fit enough to keep up with me

  • Can use your initiative in difficult situations

  • Good communication and can interpret words that may be difficult to understand and identify their meaning

  • Good observation skills

  • Previous experience and/or training of caring for a child with autism and/or epilepsy, or willingness to undergo training

  • Friendly, approachable, honest, clear communicator, good time keeping.

  • Desirable requirements:
  • Relevant university degree (e.g. social work, child development)

  • Ability to use picture cards to support communication

  • Ability to make social stories

  • Ability to use zones of regulation

  • Teaching experience in a SEN environment

  • Autism experience with pathological demand avoidance

  • Background checks and trial period
This position is subject to a satisfactory DBS check, 3-month probationary period and references.
