Full Job Description

We are a team of people who love and look after the most amazing Sanctuary in Kent, along with the 30+ big and small cats that call BCS home. We're now looking for an experienced Buildings and Projects Manager to run our Building & and Maintenance department and contribute to the ongoing development of the site.

With technical knowledge of building and maintenance work and of Health & Safety procedures in daily site operation, you should be familiar and competent in managing and maintaining statutory compliance.

A dynamic approach to work is necessary as well as excellent attention to detail and enthusiasm to problem solve. Our ideal candidate will be self-motivated and fully able to meet tight deadlines and prioritise workflow. We need someone who is polite with a positive approach to work as we are a small team. The right candidate would be energetic and happy to help plan, coordinate and deliver a huge variety of projects around a large site.

Responsibilities:

  • Successfully plan, budget, and deliver construction and maintenance projects, such as building big cat habitats.

  • Oversee and manage the Building & Maintenance Team, as well sub-contractors and other third parties to ensure all projects run smoothly and are delivered on time and on budget.

  • Supervise all on-site construction activities.

  • Obtain quotes and negotiate pricing and terms with suppliers to obtain the best deals while adhering to budgetary constraints.

  • Take responsibility for engaging and managing subcontractors.

  • Ensure Health and Safety Regulations and Sanctuary Protocols are always adhered to.

  • Liaise with stakeholders to provide regular updates about projects.

  • Manage resources and equipment to ensure these are used correctly.

  • Monitor the budget of construction projects to ensure they are cost-effective.

  • Be responsible for the ordering of project goods and materials (including plant hire); scheduling deliveries in line with project needs and effectively controlling stock.

  • Carry out general administration tasks such as preparing reports and maintaining site records.

  • Conduct regular inspections to ensure the site looks its best, functions as it should and complies with all health and safety and other statutory regulations; planning and actioning any remedial works as required.

  • Assist with the completion of Risk Assessments, designing and relaying safe systems of work and organising the training & development of other team members as required.

  • Discuss maintenance concerns with the Trustees and help develop solutions to any foreseeable problems before they arise.

    Strong understanding of budgeting, and project planning.

  • Hands on maintenance knowledge and skills

  • To be confident in appointing and managing both construction and specialist contractors

  • Proven line manager experience which includes motivating and leading team members.

  • Good communication skills and the ability to supervise and work productively with contractors.

  • Practical work experience, working as a facilities or construction manager, site supervisor, tradesperson, or in a similar role within a relevant field.

  • Strong organisational, leadership and interpersonal skills

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal alongside strong problem-solving and organizational skills

  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations

  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, etc.).

  • Full driving license and access to own vehicle is essential as The Big Cat Sanctuary is not accessible by public transport.

  • In line with the requirements of the Asylum & Immigration Act 1996, all applicants must be eligible to live and work in the UK or must obtain permits to work in the UK prior to application (documented evidence of eligibility will be required from candidates as part of the recruitment process)

  • Requirements (Desirable):
  • Experience working in a leisure attraction or zoo environment.

  • Experience of leading on safety management and hold a current NEBOSH or IOSH qualification.

  • Experience with project planning/management.

  • A qualification in construction/project management

  • The position is offered on a full-time basis, 5 days per week (Monday to Friday 08.00-17.00)
