We are recruiting for an Associate to join our market-leading Commercial Dispute Resolution team in Birmingham.

Our national Commercial Dispute Resolution team is highly ranked in the Legal 500, and this role would enable the successful individual to work closely with a Partner and a Legal Director, recognised by the Legal 500 and Chambers UK.

This role is a full time, permanent opportunity, offered on a hybrid working basis, and will further strengthen our existing Commercial Dispute Resolution team that operate on a national basis.

Your Team

Commercial disputes are an inevitable part of business life and resolving these issues efficiently is fundamental to commercial success. Our team is experienced in providing practical, commercial solutions ranging from advice in the first stages of a disagreement through to court proceedings and enforcement. Alternative dispute resolution such as mediation and arbitration is also a major part of our work.

We work with a wide range of businesses from plcs, public bodies and international companies to owner-managed businesses and non-profit organisations in addition to high-profile and high-net worth individuals. We offer genuine industry knowledge to clients spanning a variety of sectors. We regularly act in significant, high value contractual disputes, negligence claims, contractual interpretation, public procurement challenges, sale of goods and services disputes, fraud and misrepresentation claims, insurance and IT disputes, as well as large debt claims and insolvency-related issues.

The team also advise on reputation management, defamation and media related issues and are involved in the high profile Voicemail Interception (more commonly known as phone hacking) litigation, pursuing claims for breach of confidence and the misuse of private information against various tabloid newspapers.

Your Role

We are looking for an ambitious individual to assist with the continued growth of the Commercial Dispute Resolution team and work directly alongside the Commercial Disputes Partner and Legal Director in Birmingham. This role will offer the successful individual the opportunity for professional growth, client exposure and excellent progression prospects.

As a key addition to the existing Commercial Dispute Resolution team, day to day you will:

  • Contribute to the growth and reputation of the firm's commercial dispute resolution practice

  • Deal with a variety of commercial disputes at all levels, including litigation, arbitration and mediation

  • Support with Voicemail Interception claims, including the management of case preparation as well as dealing with litigated cases

  • Collaborate closely with the Partners and wider team nationwide

  • Support the team with networking and business development initiatives

  • Contribute to best practice and precedent development

  • Be flexible and undertake ad hoc travel to London, to attend client meetings, conferences with Counsel and for Court hearings

  • Support with the development and supervision of more junior team members


  • We want you to be successful. You will manage your own caseloads ensuring your experience is varied and broad. Through our national service lines you will work with notable clients and become a sector specialist. You will receive bespoke training throughout your career ensuring you have the technical and commercial skills to build an effective and successful practice.

  • A Qualified Solicitor (SRA or Law Society Registered), ideally NQ-2 PQE

  • A proven Commercial Dispute Resolution background, with a good knowledge of litigation principles and a genuine interest in commercial dispute resolution

  • A good working knowledge of the CPR, with an understanding of case / trial preparation for contentious matters

  • Exposure to working on serious and complex matters, is desirable

  • Able to demonstrate a methodical and focused approach with a keen, analytical eye for detail

  • Excellent communication and organisational skills, with an ability to correctly prioritise work and meet strict deadlines

  • An enthusiastic, proactive and can-do attitude, with the ability to demonstrate initiative while working alone and as part of a team

  • Commercially aware with enthusiasm for business development, and an appetite for keeping up-to-date with the latest developments in your practice area and sector focus

  • Able to understand your client's business needs, and act in the best interest of the firm and the client

  • An ambitious and enthusiastic team player, able to support senior fee earners and contribute to our collaborative culture
