Full Job Description

The Assistant Team Leader provides comprehensive operational support to activity in the Transaction Services Team, working closely with the Team Leader, Senior Managers and Group Lead in our Real Estate sub-team to help manage the continued development and performance of Paralegals and Legal Apprentices. The Real Estate sub-team is structured in an aligned model and each line manager has responsibility for a defined group of Paralegals or apprentices aligned to one of the Firm's clients or practice groups within the Real Estate Group., The Assistant Team Leader will also carry out some fee earning work. The Assistant Team Leader will have a focus on the Real Estate sub-team but will also have some wider responsibilities within the TST. This role can be based in Leeds or Manchester, with occasional travel to the other UK offices, as required., The following list of duties is not exhaustive but gives a flavour of what the Assistant Team Leader might undertake:

Work Allocation and Operational Management

  • Taking instructions from internal clients, ensuring requirements are understood and allocating appropriate resource within the Real Estate sub-team

  • Having responsibility for work allocation amongst, and the delivery of work by their aligned groups

  • Ensuring that work is delivered effectively and efficiently

  • Implementing and carrying out quality assurance checks on tasks undertaken by their aligned group and broader sub-team

  • Undertaking daily and weekly tasks and reporting relating to the Real Estate subteam Operating Protocol and operation of the wider Real Estate sub-team


  • Line Management
  • Leading identified groups of Legal Apprentices, Paralegals and Senior Paralegals

  • Providing coaching and regular feedback, and carrying out regular check ins to develop, encourage and motivate those individuals

  • Taking responsibility for individual paralegal and team development plans and proactively managing individual and team workloads and capacity and performance

  • Working with the TST Leadership Team to provide a consistent approach to performance management and to ensure the resourcing needs of the whole team are considered


  • Fee Earning
  • Assisting with and supervising the fee earning tasks undertaken by the Real Estate sub-team across English, Welsh and Scots Law, including:


  • Dealing with post-completion work including the submission of Land Registry and land tax applications across England, Scotland and Wales;

  • Drafting, reviewing and reporting on legal documents such as leases and licences;

  • Managing electronic datasites, uploading and ordering documentation and liaising with third parties;

  • Checking property title information and reviewing titles to confirm land ownership and lease terms;

  • Dealing with transactions from inception through to completion including liaising directly with the client and third parties as well as supporting more senior fee earners on larger transactions;

  • Checking legal documents for quality, consistency and content

  • Providing ad hoc transactional support on Real Estate projects;

  • Any other tasks as required by the business


  • Managing the larger, more complex projects the team is instructed to complete

    Assisting with the coordination and delivery of team training and keeping up to date with technical developments and knowhow relating to the Real Estate Group and the work carried out by the team, including relevant legal technology

    Team Growth
  • Responsibility for developing their aligned groups, including engaging with relevant fee earners and partners to promote the TST and proactively identifying and promoting new business opportunities

  • Working with Lawyers, Paralegals and Apprentices to identify work for the sub-team and aligned groups

  • Proactively promoting new business opportunities to internal and external clients

  • Contributing to the development of the sub-team and the wider TST


  • Supporting Team Leaders and Senior Managers
  • Assisting in the recruitment and other processes relating to the operation of the wider Real Estate sub-team and the Real Estate sub-team Operating Protocol

  • Supporting with running team meetings

  • Delivering ad hoc training and helping to coordinate the team training programme

  • Deputising for the Team Leader

  • Other ad hoc tasks as required by the sub-team

    Experience of Real Estate legal work and in particular, an understanding of the Land Registry and SDLT processes is desirable but not essential. However, applicants must be willing to build a detailed understanding of these processes

  • Supervisory experience and experience of defining work processes and "best practice" approaches is also desirable but not essential

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • A clear ability to manage complex and changing work-loads flexibly and efficiently

  • An ability to juggle multiple tasks and deadlines whilst maintaining a high attention to detail at all times
