Full Job Description

The Vetting Aftercare Officer develops, manages and maintains a stakeholder-facing engagement strategy. The strategy is required to provide primary support and sustain strong communication links with Sellafield Ltd and the supply chain.

The role is to be undertaken with the intention of promoting Vetting Aftercare, interpreting and delivering advice and information in relation to the management of insider threat.

Responsibilities include:

  • To provide a single point of contact for Sellafield Ltd and the Supply Chain Workforce for Vetting Aftercare and where appropriate provide support to the Vetting Aftercare administration process.


  • Promote and develop the profile of Vetting Aftercare in Sellafield Ltd and the supply chain.


  • Develop and maintain key internal and external stakeholder relationships, providing advice and guidance on current Vetting Aftercare best practice in order to influence and promote capabilities and capacity.


  • Act as a single point of contact for liaison in relation to strategic delivery (eg, ONR, trade unions, Programme & Project Partners (PPP) etc).


  • Reduce the risk of insider activity, protect the organisation's assets and where necessary, support investigations to resolve suspicions or provide evidence for disciplinary procedures.


  • Minimise the likelihood of existing pass holders becoming a security concern.


  • The management, retention and disposal of confidential personal data in compliance with Data protection requirements.


  • Undertake and manage data analysis to drive site delivery on expected behaviours and standards on behavioural characteristics.


  • Develop, manage and undertake development workshops in relation to Vetting Aftercare and reducing the insider threat.


  • Develop, manage and maintain an efficient communication strategy for Vetting Aftercare in the supply chain.


  • Conduct assurance checks on the Sellafield Ltd supply chain and governance processes.


  • Create and continuously improve approved security vetting processes and arrangements.


  • To make recommendations to the Personnel Security Vetting Manager in relation to changes to clearance levels and site access issues.


  • To suspend site, IT and Information access should there be significant concern relating to an individual's clearance.


  • To withdraw sponsorship of an NSV clearance where there is significant concern relating to an individual.


  • To approve or deny any agreement to acknowledge BPSS clearances confirmed by other nuclear sector companies.


  • Endorse or decline Security Risk Assessments.


  • Authorise additions, amendments and removals on the Security Management System.


  • Deputise for Personnel Security Manager whenever required.


  • Please note, this role is named internally as Vetting Aftercare Engagement Officer.

    Essential Skills:


  • Degree (min 2:2) in relevant discipline or equivalent, a relevant recognised professional qualification, where appropriate together with adequate years relevant experience within personnel security.


  • Good interpersonal and communication skills across all levels.


  • Proven ability to wield influence over and interact proactively with internal/external stakeholders.


  • Resilient, with high levels of personal integrity and credibility needed to challenge, question, persuade and influence at all levels, and make difficult decisions which personally affect employees.


  • Proven ability to provide effective administrative support in a demanding environment, sometime under time pressure.


  • Good judgement and decision making in relation to personal matters relative to the holders of a NSV security clearance.


  • Self-motivated and can demonstrate high levels of resilience, honesty and integrity.


  • Ability to network and connect with other professions in order to deliver successful outcomes.


  • The ability to implement effective prioritisation in a constantly changing environment.


  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications.


  • Desirable Skills:

  • Good stakeholder management and interpersonal skills.


  • Good communication and presentational skills.


  • Good understanding of Data Protection requirements.


  • Professional Registration with a relevant institute (eg, Security Institute etc).


  • Experience of working within and delivering services in a highly regulated environment.


  • Experience of working with law enforcement and other local authority agencies.


  • Experience of working directly with a regulatory body.


  • An understanding of Civil Nuclear operations and the activities conducted by Sellafield Ltd.


  • Experience of working as part of a Personnel Security capability.


  • An understanding of the key principles of Personnel Security within a Civil Nuclear environment.


  • Good understanding of Data Protection requirements and legislation (including UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018).
