Full Job Description

This appointment is for a Specialty Doctor in Perioperative Care for Older Persons Undergoing Surgery (POPS); in Geriatric Medicine to work in the Department of Medicine.

The post provides excellent medical experience, teaching, and opportunities for learning. The post's scheduled hours conform to guidance on junior doctors' hours. The hours of work will be Monday to Friday 09:00-17:00.

The post is a pilot role expanding on the Geriatric Medicine commitment to supporting frail patients in the perioperative period. The post holder will look to expand on our current provision through becoming a presence on the surgical ward supporting frail patients in the perioperative period., 1. Comprehensive review of frail patients undergoing surgery, working closely with the surgical inpatient teams but under supervision by the inpatient Geriatric Team.
2. Comprehensive review of frail patients admitted with rib fractures.
3. Medical input for the surgical team with assistance for frail patients on the surgical ward.
4. Supervision and teaching of junior medical staff in aspects of frailty.
5. Participate in quality improvement and audit of patients managed by the service.
6. Communication with general practitioners, patients and relatives / carers
7. Teaching of nurses, other members of the MDT and visiting medical students
8. No fixed research commitment is expected, but research will be encouraged and facilities for it made available whenever possible.
9. The specialty doctor accepts that he/she will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances, at the request of his/her particular consultant, in consultation, where practicable with his/her colleagues, both senior and junior.
10. You must be aware of and put into practice the Health and Safety procedures relevant for each ward or department in which you are required to work, including mandatory training.
