Our Field Operations teams work towards protecting people and the environment by maintaining and operating our flood and coastal risk management assets across the country. We provide advice and support to our colleagues across the business and to external customers and stakeholders. We respond to flooding and environmental incidents both day and night and provide mutual aid which supports our colleagues and communities across the country when flooding incidents occur.

In this role, you will work closely with your Team Leader to:

  • Complete our maintenance programme by planning, scheduling and resourcing works.

  • Actively monitor the team's work to ensure that high standards in health, safety and wellbeing are maintained whilst promoting a proactive culture. Working safely is paramount.

  • Ensure we have clear and concise site paperwork and assist on projects, take responsibility for work specifications, and work collaboratively with internal and external partners.

  • Ensure work sites are fully compliant to legal requirements and Environment Agency policies and procedures.

  • Identify organise, and coordinate training to test our incident response plans.

  • Assist in leading our operational response to flood and environmental incidents by participating and training in an incident role.


  • The team
    Field teams are the workforce of the Environment Agency.

    As our 'frontline', the field teams protect people and the environment by providing operational response during flood events, maintain our river and coastal assets and provide 24/7 response to maintain defences. The field teams have a range of technical skills they use to deliver watercourse maintenance, along with asset maintenance and construction projects. The team's work collaboratively across the organisation to achieve outcomes., The Environment Agency is a Category 1 responder, and everyone has a role to play. You'll be expected to take part in a regular standby roster, responding to an incident or emergency 24/7 over a 7-day period. We'll help you to identify an incident role that fits with your skills, experience, and personal circumstances. You will get additional pay and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you.

    We are seeking a proactive, self-motivated and confident communicator with experience working in field-based teams.,
  • Knowledge and experience of managing Health and Safety on construction and maintenance sites.

  • Competent IT literacy; the ability to use devices, Excel and databases.

  • Good organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple, conflicting priorities.

  • Good knowledge of Risk Assessment Method Statements (RAMS), Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) and Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER)

  • Organisational skills and ability to work under pressure.

  • Effective and inclusive leadership.

  • A full UK Driving Licence.

  • Health & Safety accreditations are advantageous.

  • X63 CDM Principal Contractor accredited training is required for this role (but we will support you to work towards this via an internal course).
