The Global Manufacturing Science and Technology (MSAT) organization is a network-focused function which provides strategic direction and technical and operational support to ensure that GSK Global Supply Chain network, site goals and objectives are achieved, through a focussed strategy execution.

MSAT is the keeper of the body of knowledge associated with the formulation, device components, analytical testing and manufacturing unit operations, creating the instruction set and ensuring manufacturing operations stay aligned with the registered process. The primary objective is to ensure manufacturing processes are capable, compliant, in control, continuously improved and aligned across Sites.

MSAT's primary functions are to lead technology transfers, implement control strategies, provide technical process support, provide process support across the product lifecycle, while implementing new products and new modalities for commercial products and product-related improvement programs within the GSK GSC perimeter., Lead the Small Molecule Process Science Laboratory at Worthing, focusing on delivering new or second generation synthetic biochemical processes, applications and technologies as well as delivering improvements to the existing supply chains based on biochemical transformations. Support the transfer of DS biochemical processes and technologies from the lab to GSC sites and or external CMO partners.

For GSC product / process transfers, lead laboratory process scale-up/facility fit activities to facilitate late stage/commercial product transfers between lab and manufacturing facilities including executing any supporting process development, process characterization, small scale validation, authoring the process development technical & regulatory documentation.

Evaluate new step changing technology platforms for GSK in partnership with R&D where appropriate. Lead development of study plans, execute laboratory work and analysis to evaluate and industrialise these technologies.

Major responsibilities include and are not limited to:

  • To provide technical expertise and leadership of a bio process science based technical team to enable the team to meet its objectives through efficient technical program definition and execution, ensuring the right level of resource prioritisation and budgeting.

  • To ensure that all staff as well as process equipment, operate in compliance with the appropriate Quality and EHS standards.

  • Where required, take ownership for complex / major projects taking accountability for delivery against key timelines.

  • Identification and championing of improvement ideas that will bring benefit to the Small Molecule portfolio or wider Supply Chain, whether through microbial strain improvement, application of enzymatic transformations or process simplification / intensification.

  • Execute both bench scale and pilot scale laboratory studies to support manufacturing campaign investigations, process robustness studies to enhance process understanding, raw material variability evaluation/understanding and strain improvement opportunities. This includes opportunities to improve process sustainability

  • Identify and evaluate new step changing technologies for GSK by development of study plans, execution of laboratory work and analysis to evaluate and industrialise these technologies. On occasion this will be in collaboration with R&D

  • Strong technical acumen and communication skills with the ability to articulate complex, technical details to stakeholders and enable cross functional collaboration across sites, supply chain and suppliers.

  • High degree of change and uncertainty - able to navigate and provide leadership to team in this environment.

  • Enforcement of Technical Standards across the team ensuring consistency in approach.

  • Managing team resource and expertise allocation across change / improvement projects with the ability to prioritise new opportunities., We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Experienced professional with strong industry-based experience in synthetic biochemical processing / Biochemistry.

  • Graduate qualification in a Science related subject.

  • Demonstrated experience in chemical / biochemical process development at laboratory and pilot scale and proven management skills.

  • A good understanding of GMP/GLP.

  • A good understanding of COSHH, ATEX and DSEAR, with experience handling flammable and hazardous substances

  • Proven leadership skills through leadership of multi-functional and multi-cultural teams

  • Highly effective interpersonal, communication and influencing skills - Enterprise mindset and behaviour.

  • Needs to be able to effectively lead department in the development and scale up of new Biosynthetic processes for transfer and industrialisation.
