The Internal Audit Department (IAD) is responsible for providing internal audit assurance to the FCDO Permanent Under Secretary (PUS), through delivery of an annual plan of internal audits. These internal audits include all aspects of the FCDO’s operations and risks, covering overseas missions, corporate systems, policy departments, and development programmes.
We are recruiting two Senior Internal Auditors to lead teams on audit reviews within FCDO. We are looking for candidates who would be comfortable working independently in forming judgements on the complex operating environment presented by the FCDO’s work, and who are eager to develop skills and experience of risk and assurance and of understanding the UK’s foreign policy and international development goals.
This is an opportunity to take on a challenging and exciting role, leading audits covering the full range of the FCDO’s work, including auditing the overseas network (e.g. Embassies/Consulates etc), central departments, corporate functions and the overseas development spend. This role provides the ideal method to progress in a profession which is highly valued within FCDO, and an opportunity to gain exposure to a wide range of the FCDO’s operations, departments and programmes., Roles and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
• Lead individual internal audit assignments in the UK and in the overseas network – including scoping the assignment, planning fieldwork, delivering fieldwork, and drafting reports - in compliance with professional performance standards.
• Coordinate and be responsible for the work of teams on the assignments you lead, and act as an effective leader of teams.
• Effectively report and communicate findings from reviews in high quality and timely verbal and written outputs.
• Build effective working relationships with senior stakeholders, including Heads of Department or Heads of Mission.
• Evaluate high risk areas and control systems for each review and recommend improvements in line with Public Sector Internal Audit Standards.
• Effectively support and develop junior staff and act as a professional role model within the department and on audit and counter fraud engagements.
• Manage multiple responsibilities and workstreams effectively and flexibly to contribute to the delivery of the full year’s audit and counter fraud plan.
• Contribute to the wider work of the IAD through active participation in the achievement of the department’s goals, the work of departmental meetings and working groups, and the development of technical knowledge and resources.
• Lead on methodology and departmental improvement priorities, helping to improve our internal processes.
The successful candidates may be required to travel between the FCDO’s UK estates on a quarterly basis. Additional travel may be required overseas, up to three times a year, for up to two weeks at a time., You must be a British Citizen at the time of application and, if invited to interview, you will need to bring proof of identity (British Passport/Driving Licence etc.) with you.

It is essential in your application that you provide evidence and proven examples in each of the following Minimum Criteria, Experience, Behaviours and Technical Skills as far as you are able to do so. Minimum Criteria
+ A professional qualification in internal audit, including CIA, PIIA, CMIIA or QIAL or an equivalent professional qualification with direct relevance to internal audit, (e.g. ACCA, ICAS, CCAB).
(We will accept applications from individuals part way through and working towards completing a qualification who also have experience of leading internal audit engagements. There is an expectation that any part-qualified successful candidate will be fully qualified within 12 months of starting in FCDO.
+ Experience of working in audit, internal or external, delivering assurance and consultancy engagements to clients by building strong relationships. From scoping to fieldwork and reporting, candidates will have experience of planning engagements, analysing risks, and communicating with senior stakeholders.
+ Experience in leading small teams on audit engagements. Able to make independent decisions, oversee the work of team members by providing guidance, advice and challenge to deliver quality audits.
+ Clear and concise in verbal and written communication to a professional standard.
+ A track record in delivering to tight deadlines, often at short notice, and the ability to self-start and participate in multiskilled teams.,
