Full Job Description

Speaking to servers, Pope Saint John Paul II once said, "Your commitment to the Altar is not only a duty but a great honour, a true and holy service." The ministry of our Cathedral Sacristy Team expresses very well these words of Pope Saint John Paul II as they assist us, devotedly, with our daily worship, for which we give thanks.

Since it was first opened in 1903, Westminster Cathedral is the only Cathedral in England where two popes have celebrated Mass, and welcomes countless visitors through its doors every day.

We are recruiting a Sacristan, who is will join the team who is responsible for the day to day running of the Cathedral Sacristy, reporting to the Head Sacristan and working within a team of dedicated Sacristans.

You will be responsible for preparing and clearing away before and after liturgical events, namely masses and other liturgical services.

You will develop a close working relationship with the team of Sacristans as well as with the Clergy, Volunteers and servers to maintain the preparation, of the sanctuary for the celebration of Mass, storage and care of liturgical vestments and assisting the Head Sacristan to maintain adequate supplies of inventories necessary for the provision of the schedule of mass.

You will be experienced in clear time management as you will need to ensure that all necessary preparations are made to ensure services begin promptly and that all delays have been mitigated

This means there's lots to get involved in - and to be excited about., You'll be joining a dynamic Sacristy team as they continue the smooth running of Sacristy that is characteristic of the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ., Actions we take to provide equality of opportunity for all candidates include:

  • We anonymise application forms during our shortlisting process to ensure that candidates are assessed without any consideration of their name, gender or background.

  • As part of this anonymisation, we don't take into consideration where candidates studied, or the method of that study e.g. full-time, part-time or distance learning.

  • We apply a consistent approach to our question setting across our applications and interviews to ensure that everyone is assessed against the identified values, competencies and job requirements.

  • Our values are important to us and as such we use a scoring framework that marks candidates based on values, behaviours and competencies.

  • We provide guidance and brief all our interviewers throughout the selection processes in recruitment best-practice to mitigate against any potential for conscious or unconscious bias or discrimination.

  • Whenever possible we will have multiple interviewers when assessing each candidate to ensure marking is accurate and fair.

  • We ensure all our assessment venues are accessible. We offer alternative formats of our application forms to encourage applicants with disabilities or who require reasonable adjustments to perform at their best.

  • We will work together with candidates with a disability or health condition to implement reasonable adjustments to enable them to feel comfortable and strive during the assessment process.

You'll love working in an integral role within Westminster Cathedral and will need the successful candidate to be able to work effectively in a small team that is comprised mainly of volunteers, and to work closely under the Precentor under his supervision and the supervision of the Chaplains of Westminster Cathedral.

  • To be successful in this role, you will need to be able to communicate well both verbally and in writing, and be a self-motivated individual that is capable of working unsupervised with an eye for detail and the ability to act on initiative when required.

Additionally, you will have excellent organisational skills, and an innate ability to prioritise your workload effectively and discreetly if required.
