The Company of Biologists is seeking to appoint a Reviews Editor to work across four of its journals: Development, Journal of Cell Science, Journal of Experimental Biology, and Disease Models & Mechanisms.

Joining a long-established and successful publishing company, this is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated team player to make a significant contribution to our highly respected journals. The successful candidate will specifically handle front section material for the journals, including commissioned reviews and poster articles, thought-provoking editorials and perspectives, and interviews with leaders in the field.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Commissioning and coordinating the peer review of front section material.

  • Developmentally editing front section articles.

  • Travelling to international scientific conferences and research institutes, representing the journals, keeping abreast of the latest research and making contacts in the community.

  • Spotting newsworthy articles, writing informative press releases and handling any media enquiries. Writing/commissioning editorial content relevant to all journals (e.g., on sustainability, research culture, equality, diversity and inclusion). Interviewing scientists. Contributing to social media output. Liaising with the journal teams.

  • Being creatively involved in the journals' development and marketing activities.

    Applicants will have a PhD in an area relevant to our journals. Candidates should have excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills. The successful candidate will have a broad interest in science, the scientific community and publishing, and may have experience with social media activities. Key attributes for the job are enthusiasm, commitment, judgement and integrity.

    This full-time position provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience on our highly successful life science journals and offers an attractive salary and benefits. The position will be based in The Company of Biologists' attractive modern office on the outskirts of Cambridge, UK. Flexible/remote working options are possible, but no less than 50% of time per week must be office-based.
