Full Job Description

It is our pleasure to start the recruitment process for the position of National Chief Clinical Informatics Officer for NHS England, leading the Transformation Directorate's Digital Clinical Informatics team.

There are many factors to assess when considering where next to further your career, and many aspects of any new organisation to evaluate. So why should you choose to work with us?

If you ask staff across our organisation what most appeals to them about working here, they talk about the criticality of the services we deliver, the very direct and measurable impact those services have on the delivery of health and care, and our track record of delivering them very effectively. The fact that we do important work, and we do it well, makes our staff feel proud and deeply fulfilled.

Beyond that, we offer the opportunity to work with leading-edge technology, with a huge user community, with brilliant clinicians and service leaders and with one of the most extraordinary data sets in the world.

The National Chief Clinical Informatics Officer (CCIO) is an absolutely critical role within our structure; They carry our vision for the power of digital transformation of health and care into senior clinical communities across the system, shaping the demand and expectations for the products and service we do, and could, deliver. They bring the vision of those clinical communities back into our organisation, working with our internal delivery functions to design products and services that meet the needs and expectations of the clinical community. They ensure that what is built is safe and clinically effective and has the intended impact across care settings and clinical pathways.

Technology is an increasingly critical aspect of clinical care, whether through increased used of wearable or embedded monitors, more communication with patients through digital channels, greater use of algorithms to inform clinical assessments, or the use of AI to interpret images or test results. Many of the software products we develop are now, rightly, regulated as medical devices.

The technical and operational risks associated with the design and use of these products translates directly into a level of clinical risk which must be understood and managed. The CCIO must advocate for the huge and ever-growing opportunities associated with digitisation of clinical pathways, and at the same time ensure a deep understanding of associated risk, and oversee the judgements necessary in evaluating the two side-by-side.

You will report to the Medical Director for Transformation and lead a multi-disciplinary team of over 150 clinical informaticians, safety engineers, and programme and operations support staff. We work hard, we are exacting about standards and quality, we value and support each other, and we have fun. And we offer a great package of pay, vacation and other incentives. But most of all, what we do matters, and if that is what matters to you, then we would like to hear from you.

We want you to be set for success and some of the skills and experience we're looking for include:

  • Substantial senior clinical experience as a clinical leader in practice with a track record of inclusive clinical leadership and strategic vision

  • Substantial experience introducing new technologies and innovations and managing business change at scale across a system, provider collaborative, or their equivalent in local government, charities or industry

  • Extensive knowledge of using information, data and analytics, standards, and harnessing technology to drive service improvement, access to services and patient empowerment across health and social care

  • Significant senior clinical Board level experience with responsibility for technology OR as Chief Clinical Information Officer within the NHS or relevant industry at provider collaborative, ICS or national scale

  • Qualified Clinical Professional with current registration with the relevant professional body (or bodies) and significant evidence of continued professional development.

We are a great place to work. What we do matters.
