Full Job Description

Plans have been drawn up for Stages 2 and 3 of the 3Ts Redevelopment of the Royal Sussex County Hospital. Stage 2 is the new Sussex Cancer Centre (SCC) that will replace the Barry Building and surrounding structures and Stage 3 is the service and logistics yard that will replace the existing Cancer Centre.

A major capital appeal is being set up to support improvements to the new centre beyond what is available through standard NHS funding.

The Capital Appeal will run in three phases:
1. Phase 1: Planning Phase
2. Phase 2: Private (Quiet) Phase
3. Phase 3: Public Phase.

The Planning Phase is crucial to ensure we have the best foundation in place for a successful appeal. During the Private/Quiet Phase, the incumbent will secure income and pledges from charitable trusts, charity partners, high-net worth donors and prospects plus corporate partners.

During the Public Phase the appeal will be widened to include community fundraising, direct response campaigns and dedicated events reaching the whole of the catchment area audience, staff, past and current patients and their families, as well as continuing work securing support from charity partners, trusts, HNW individuals and corporates.

The wider capital development programme will also require charity input over time. The post holder will be expected to advise the charity on support for this programme, for instance, the acute floor reconfiguration at the Royal Sussex County Hospital and the new stroke unit at St Richard's Hospital., Lead the Capital Appeal for Sussex Cancer Centre's £170m redevelopment project to build a new Cancer Centre. Within the charity, the post holder will work closely with the Director, the Head of Fund Raising and Communication as well as the current communications and fundraising team to ensure a co-ordinated and cohesive approach to raising the required Capital funds.

To this end the postholder will:

  • be adroit at building high-level internal and external relationships and be able to identify and develop donors and prospects to secure significant gifts.

  • be skilled in seeking out motivations and matching giving criteria with the needs of the SCC.

  • use great communication skills and a creative mind set to develop strong working relationships with supporters and prospects at all levels to deliver income and gifts in seven figures.

  • coordinate with colleagues from across the spectrum of departments involved in supported capital programmes to ensure the full integration of the fundraising and charitable functions within the relevant project and governance structures.

  • identify the internal and external people and resources needed to achieve the appeals goals and manage the same.
