Caterpillar's Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) designs, tests and manufactures 0.5 to 18L Cat and Perkins engines that power over 5000 applications including Marine, Petroleum, Industrial Applications, Electric Generators, and Locomotives. Caterpillar's company strategy includes sustainability as one of four focus areas and IPSD is engaged and actively preparing green energy solutions for the future., An exciting opportunity to join Component Engineering and lead projects of turbochargers and air boosting/charging systems on the Caterpillar C4.4 & C7.1 engine platforms. This will emcompass current product improvements through to new introduction of new technologies for bespoke & challenging applications. You will be part of a motivated team that collaborates with Business Partners, Component Suppliers & Production Facilities Globally, developing solutions that achieve world-class levels of performance, quality & reliability., As a Principal Engineer, you will play a leading role in developing air boosting/charging systems components and turbocharger technology to meet customer needs and improving current products and processes to enhance market competitiveness. You will support a diverse and inclusive environment, coaching less experienced engineers to achieve success. Key responsibilities include:

  • Plan and deliver turbocharger component development projects to achieve time, cost and quality goals.

  • Communicate project status and key issues to peers, stakeholders and management.

  • Lead design reviews to gain cross-functional business support for new designs, supplier nomination and capital investment.

  • Collaborate with suppliers to develop specifications and deliver quality solutions utilizing the APQP process.

  • Assess technical risk through FMEA; define and coordinate simulation and validation activities (DVP&R).

  • Investigate and resolve technical issues using 8D methodology and complex data analysis.

  • Write and review technical information and technical reports to support production design release and reflect on lessons learnt.

    Full-time role, up to 10% global travel., Technical Excellence: Good understanding of mechanical engineering principles, engine systems, and turbocharger fundamentals. Ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges.

  • Effective Communications: Able to communicate technical information clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Project Management: Able to plan, control and deliver complex projects to achieve objectives.

  • Analytical Thinking: Able to use tools and techniques to analyse data and determine the root cause of complex technical problems.


  • Top candidates may also be skilled in some of the following areas:
  • Technical Excellence: Turbocharging expertise including wastegate controls, multi-stage, and variable geometry turbochargers. Expertise in air systems including exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), intake throttles, engine performance and/or charge air cooling.

  • Product Development: Be able to develop components using APQP. Able to design, plan and execute testing strategies (including simulation, rig testing, and full system testing) using FMEA and DVP&R.

  • Experience in the off-highway or construction machine equipment engine application & installation., Degree (or equivalent experience) in an accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum.
