Full Job Description

To work within the Biochemical Genetics Unit (BGU) providing a specialised service (i.e. newborn blood spot screening and immunosuppressant drug analysis) for Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire to nationally accepted standards (ISO 15189).

To include:
Managing processes of the day-to-day activities of the laboratory as well as participate service improvement programmes.
Providing advice and specialist training in the analysis of tests in the BGU newborn blood spot repertoire.

Applications are invited from enthusiastic and highly motivated Specialist Biomedical Scientists or existing Advanced Biomedical Scientists for the post of Advanced Biomedical Scientist in the Biochemical Genetics Unit.

This is a challenging post and offers an aspiring Biomedical Scientist the opportunity to manage the dedicated team of healthcare professionals to maintain a high-quality service for newborn blood spot screening, metabolic analysis and immunosuppressant monitoring. This role demands both technical and regulatory aspects of laboratory practice including managing turnaround times, training staff, management of stock items and participate in the quality management system.

You must be HCPC registered as a Biomedical Scientist and have a relevant postgraduate M-level academic qualification (e.g. MSc). The right candidate who is nearing the completion of a MSc with significant demonstrable experience of working at specialist Biomedical Scientist (AfC B6) within a related field of newborn screening will also be considered, this applicant will remain on AfC B6 until the completion of their MSc. You must have experience of using methodologies including practical experience of using a tandem mass spectrometer, a range of chromatographic techniques and the use of immunoassay. In addition, line management experience would be an advantage., The Biochemical Genetics Unit provides Newborn Blood Spot Screening for East Anglia, immunosuppressant drug service and metabolic investigations for hospitals within this area and further afield. The laboratory team is committed to providing a friendly, responsive and efficient service and you will need to demonstrate both leadership qualities and an ability to work as a team player., Health Professions Council registration as a Biomedical Scientist
BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent.
MSc / FIBMS in Biomedical Science or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
Extensive practical experience of working in a Biomedical Science laboratory and associated knowledge.
Experience of managing people.
Experience of managing and use of pathology IT systems.
Experience of performing risk assessments.
Experience of managing quality management systems.

Desirable criteria
Experience of working in a NHS screening laboratory and using specialist LIMS
Experience of using mass spectrometer and automated immunoassay system
