Full Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity within our Veterinary team for a Veterinary Surgeon Lead - Welfare, based at our fully equipped veterinary hospital near Honiton, Devon. Possessing a welfare driven attitude to veterinary medicine and experience of managing donkey welfare issues, you will support the delivery and maintenance of high standards of welfare for all donkeys in the UK, Ireland and Europe, provide veterinary care for Donkey Sanctuary donkeys, and provide advice and education on donkey health and welfare to key stakeholders. As the main point of referral both internally and externally for welfare issues affecting donkeys in the UK, Ireland and Europe, you will take the lead on welfare issues affecting donkeys in our care and privately owned animals and provide expert opinion and advice on welfare issues managed by other members of the veterinary team., Your principal duties and responsibilities will include -

  • Undertaking routine and emergency clinical care of all animals resident at The Donkey Sanctuary within the Guidelines to Professional conduct as issued by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, ensuring that the recommended CPD of 105 hours over three years, with an average of 35 hours per year is achieved

  • Leading on welfare issues affecting donkeys in our care and privately owned animals

  • Providing expert opinion and advice on welfare issues managed by other members of the veterinary team

  • Auditing relinquishments, supported moves and rehoming, enabling evidence based improvements to be made

  • Providing management and leadership for the new arrivals team;

  • Providing in-house training to interns and members of the veterinary and welfare teams;

  • Participation in the provision of an emergency on-call service.

    Veterinary degree with MRCVS.

  • Significant experience/post grad qualification in equine medicine.

  • Experience of working at a senior level in equine practice.

  • Experience of managing donkey welfare issues.

  • Ability to work to a high standard and act as a role model.

  • Ability to deliver evidence based improvements to donkey welfare.

  • Show a welfare driven attitude to veterinary medicine.

  • Full current valid driving licence.

  • Fluent in English.
